Boys Golf
Desert Vista junior Cody McManus tied for second place individually with a 5-under par 139 (70-69) at the Division I state tournament. The Thunder finished second as a team behind Red Mountain.
Red Mountain junior Kolton Lapa finished tied for fifth individually with a two-day total of 3-under par 141 as the Lions won the Division I state golf team championship at the Randolph Golf Complex in Tucson.
Badminton
Xavier’s Cate Welch captured the individual state title by defeating Millennium’s Stephanie Vermillion 11-2, 11-8.
Girls Cross Country
Highland junior Tory Haberman took first place in the Division I, Section III championship race at Freestone Park this weekend with a time of 19 minutes, 33 seconds. The Hawks won the Section III team championship and will advance to next week’s state championship competition.
Marcos de Niza’s Kylie Keiser took top honors at the Division II, Section III race Friday with a time of 19 minutes, 43.75 seconds as the Padres won the section meet.
Boys Cross Country
Highland’s Cory Breinholt won the boys race in Division I, Section III with a time of 16 minutes, 22 seconds to lead the Hawks to a second-place overall finish in the section behind Corona del Sol entering next week’s state championship run.
Saguaro’s Jake Wynn (16 minutes, 27.6 seconds) topped his brother, Zach, by 0.37 seconds to win the Division III, Section 1 championship at Grand Canal Liner Park. Both Wynns helped the Sabercats to a first-place finish at Grand Canal Liner Park.
Girls Volleyball
Desert Ridge outside hitter Talia Jones had 31 kills on Tuesday as the Jaguars held on for a five-set win over Mountain Pointe, and she followed it up Wednesday with 15 kills and five aces with a sweep of Westwood.
