Tempe Prep learned first-hand how impressive it was that Valley Christian put together a 15-year streak of state championships, a streak that the Knights ended last year.

Repeating as champions proved too difficult for Tempe Prep on Saturday at the Division IV state track championships at Mesa Community College. Tucson Pusch Ridge Christian claimed its first-ever track championship with 95 points, but Tempe Prep did earn the runner-up trophy with 84.5 points and Valley Christian was third with 81.5. Chandler Prep was 8th with 27 points.

Tempe Prep hadn’t secured its second-place trophy until the final event of the evening, the girls long jump. The Knights needed 15 points to catch Valley Christian and Claire Horvath and Catherine Bryant more than took care of that, finishing 1-2 to secure 18 points and a trophy finish.

Horvath won with a jump of 16-2, adding to the second-place finish she had in the 100 (12.69) and the fourth-place finish in the 200. Bryant jump 16-1 ½.

Tempe Prep also got a big effort from Emily Hedberg, who was second in the 1,600 on Friday night and followed that up with a third-place finish in the 3,200 on Saturday.

Valley Christian had three individual champions on the day, with Sydney Tassielli sweeping the hurdle events in her final prep meet and Chandler Fraley capping her pole vault career with her second title, clearing 12-0.

Tassielli won the 100 hurdles in 15.36 and the 300 hurdles in 46.55. Second in both hurdle events was Chadler Prep’s Sarah Strong.

Tassielli was also third in the triple jump (33-5 ¾).
