Softball state tournament roundup: Red Mtn., Basha, Chandler win in final at-bats

Top-seeded Red Mountain got a game-winning single from Haley Culley to advance the Mountain Lions past No. 9 Casa Grande 5-4 in 5A Division I softball state tournament action on Tuesday night.

Briana Gonzalez scored the winning run from third base. Culley finished 3-for-5. Breanna Macha pitched a complete game five hitter for her 17th win of the season. Red Mountain will play Mountain View on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Rose Mofford Sports Complex.

Casa Grande will play Chandler on Thursday at 5 p.m. in an elimination game, also at Rose Mofford.

In other 5A-I softball tournament action, fourth-seeded Mountain View advanced with a 5-1 win over visiting No. 5 Glendale Mountain Ridge. Heather Shomperlen hit a three-run home run for the Toros (23-10). Val Kaff pitched a complete game, gave up four hits and struck out eight batters to earn the win, while Amy Tarnowski and Kelli Wickerman each had two hits.

No. 12 Chandler beat No. 13 Skyline 4-3 in 11 innings in an elimination game. Aubree May had the winning RBI in the 11th inning to score Sharee Blomquist. Kristal Whiteside earned the win by allowing no earned runs and posting nine strikeouts.

No. 2 Gilbert faces elimination after being shut out, 3-0, at home by No. 10 Tucson Salpointe. The Tigers must now win its game against No. 14 Sierra Vista Buena on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Rose Mofford.

Third-seeded Basha edged out No. 6 Hamilton, 4-3, at home, thanks to a game-winning two-run home run by pitcher Kailey Regester in the bottom of the seventh after Hamilton led 3-0 earlier in the game. The Bears will play No. 10 Tucson Salpointe on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Rose Mofford. Hamilton must rebound to play Xavier for a fourth time this season in an elimination game Thursday night at Rose Mofford.

No. 11 Dobson saw its season come to an end with a 4-2 loss to No. 14 Sierra Vista Buena. The Mustangs finished the season at 18-14.

No. 7 Xavier earned the right to keep playing with a 10-2 win over No. 15 Mesquite in an elimination game. Katie Appelbe was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kendyl Melton finished 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI and Emma Bogart was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI to lead the Gators (22-9). Domi Shone was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Wildcats.


No. 6 Desert Mountain rallied and scored five runs in the sixth inning to avoid elimination from No. 14 Marana Mountain View. Rose Hannan went 2 for 3 and knocked in two runs for the Wolves (25-8). Jordan Conover had two hits and knocked in two runs. Andy Wellins earned her 20th win of the season for Desert Mountain.

No. 1 Horizon beat No. 8 Perry, 2-1. Leah White was 1-for-2 with a run scored on a stolen base and a walk. Allison Schullo pitched a five-hitter and earned the win. The Huskies will face Glendale Deer Valley on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sandra Day O'Connor High School. Perry will play Avondale Westview on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in an elimination game, also at Sandra Day O'Connor High School.

No. 4 Pinnacle lost to No. 5 Deer Valley, 1-0, as Lauren Haeger threw a complete-game shutout with 16 strikeouts, and homered for the game's only run. Jenna Makis was nearly as good for Pinnacle with 10 strikeouts in the complete game effort. The Pioneers will play Peoria Centennial in an elimination game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Sandra Day O’Connor.

No. 10 Chaparral upset No. 2 Yuma Cibola, 6-3. The Firebirds will face No. 3 Ironwood Ridge on Saturday at noon at Sandra Day O’Connor High School.
