A memorial service for former Chandler High School girls basketball coach and administrator Mike Desper, who passed away last week, will be held at 6 p.m. today at the school’s gymnasium.
Among the speakers will be former Desper assistants and co-workers Meg Gianesello and Kathleen Regel, ASU women’s basketball coach Charli Turner Thorne, and former players Lindsay Guiney (now Lindsay Urban) and Kami Vanderwalker (now Kami Coombs).
FOOTBALL
East Valley assistants land head coaching jobs: Former Westwood and current Mesa Community College assistant coach Randy Ricedorff has been selected as the next varsity football coach at Phoenix Trevor Browne, while longtime East Valley assistant George DeLaTorre has landed the head coaching job at Phoenix South Mountain.
DeLaTorre has been a varsity assistant at Red Mountain, Skyline and most recently and on more than one occasion, Westwood, where he is currently the boys track coach.
TRACK
Mountain View thrower signs with Ohio State: Two-time 5A East Valley Region champion shot put and discus thrower Cori Tarzwell of Mountain View signed a letter of intent Monday with Ohio State. Tarzwell won the 5A state title in the shot put last year and will shoot for both titles Wednesday and Saturday this week at the 5A state meet at ASU.

Let’s get physical: Mountain View will provide sports physicals 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the school’s annex building.
