Seventh edition of Tempe High sports hall of fame

The Buffalo Foundation will sponsor the 6th induction ceremony for the Tempe High School Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 17th at 6 p.m. in the Tempe High cafeteria.

Tempe athletes were previously inducted in 1989, 1991, 1995, 2003 and 2007.

Event tickets are $25 each; for information about the banquet contact Tempe High School (480) 967-1661. RSVP is required and the deadline is April 10th.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will kick off a Buffalo Foundation weekend of events on Friday, April 18th.

There will be a no host happy hour at Bogey’s and the Annual Foundation Golf Tournament to be held at Ken McDonalds Golf Course on Saturday, April 19th.

Currently the Tempe High School Hall of Fame has 134 athletes and 10 Honorary Members. This year there are 15 inductees being added to the Hall of Fame.

Gil Montanez 1950 grad football/baseball, Korean War Vet, Tempe City Council, Tempe Postmaster, Tempe Man of the Year 1987.

Vince Martinez 1984 grad football/track, all region 1st Team DB

Katrena (Bodily) Besich 1999 grad badminton/tennis/track, State Champ girls pole vault. Graduated top 5% of class, Ricks College Track Scholarship.

Ryan Baker 2000 grad track, cross country, State Champ 1600 Run 98 & 99, member of 4 X 400 State Champ Relay 2000, All State Cross Country.

Carl Harris - Honorary Member retired Tempe High Teacher/Coach, coached football/track. Arizona Assistant Football Coach of the Year 1996. Tempe PE Department Chair.

Justin Taplin 1997 grad football/track Football All-State - Arizona Offensive Player of the Year – 1996 Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year, Arizona State University Football Scholarship, Arena Football League 6 years.

Jim Foster - Honorary Member retired Tempe High Teacher/Coach. coached baseball/softball/football. 1988 Arizona All Star Baseball Coach.

Debbie (Pinter) Foster 1987 grad track/softball/volleyball/cheer. All City Softball. Softball Scholarship Mesa Community College, Over 20 years as a volunteer in many capacities.

John Radford 1977 grad track & field, Pole Vault All State. Track Scholarship to Mesa Community College, 1996 Central Arizona Middle School Teacher of the Year.

Glenn Alford - Honorary Member retired Tempe High Teacher/Coach, coached wrestling/football, 2 Wrestling Team State Championships, 3 State Runner-ups. Coached 15 individual State Champs, Football 1983 Region Champions 9-2.

Maurice Smith 2002 grad football/basketball  All State Football - 5 School Records 3rd in State in Career Rushing 5,046 yds, Volunteer coaching youth football.

Daniel Taplin 1990 grad football/track, 1989 All State Football. Football Scholarship Mesa Community College and Utah State University.

Dave Robson 1988 grad baseball/football/basketball. All State Baseball 1988, 2nd Team All State Football. Graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Baseball Scholarship to Arizona State University.

Lynzell Jackson 2001 grad basketball/football/track All-State in all 3 sports. Basketball Region Player of the Year. Track - State Champ in High Jump & Triple Jump - State runner-up 200 Dash and Long Jump. Football Scholarship to Utah University. Drafted by Carolina Panthers.
