VX Roundup 4/17: Val Kaff sets Mountain View strikeout record in win

Valerie Kaff broke her own Mountain View single-season strikeout record in Mountain View softball's 12-2 win over Westwood on Wednesday.

Kaff, who set the record as a junior at 301, tied that mark in Tuesday's win against Westwood. Facing them again Wednesday, she broke her record with the first hitter of the game, and wound up with 13 strikeouts to push her season total to 314.

Sidney Ryan hit a grand slam and ended up with 5 RBIs to lead the offense for the Toros. Kaff, Brittney Lindblom, Teddy Yellowman and Kayla Jackson all had multiple hits in the game for the Toros.

Emily Mattison had a triple and scored a run for the Warriors.


Chaparral 11, North Canyon 1: Behind another strong pitching night from Dallas McBride, Kendra Coleman had three hits, two runs and two RBIs, and three other Firebirds have two hits each in the win. Ashtyn Coleman and Alexa Thorell both drove in two runs and McBride helped her own cause (one hit, one run, 11 strikeouts) with an RBI triple.

Poston Butte 14, Higley 1; Poston Butte 16, Combs 0


Brophy def. Boulder Creek 28-30, 15-25, 26-24, 32-30, 18-16: Ryne Benson had 18 kills and Adam Lincoln added 12 kills in the Broncos' victory.


Basha 6, Perry 3: Tied at 3-3 after singles matches, the Bears swept doubles to take down their rival and move closer to securing Basha's first trip to the Division I state tournament (No. 15 as of Wednesday afternoon). Jewel Brundrett put on another dominating performance, winning 6-2, 6-1 in singles and then teaming with Chayse Olson to win 8-2 in doubles.
