Fourth-seeded Salt River upset No. 1 Fredonia 64-53 Wednesday night in first-round action of the 1A state boys basketball playoffs at Desert Ridge High School.
The Eagles advance to play Superior at 7 p.m. today at Westwood High School.
In another first-round game, Surrey Garden defeated Joseph City 62-46. The Knights knocked Joseph City out of the state tournament, and will go on to play Patagonia at 7 p.m. today at Mesa High School.
In other action, Valley Lutheran downed Grand Canyon 46-31; Fort Thomas defeated Valley Union 57-39; Superior topped St. David 35-27; Patagonia defeated Pima 60-49 in overtime; Duncan downed Academy of Tucson 59-28; and Orme School topped Mogollon 75-55.
3A BOYS
In first-round games played Wednesday night: Payson defeated Monument Valley 68-65; Alchesay downed Ganado 57-38; and Holbrook topped Winslow 68-65.
1A GIRLS
On Wednesday night, in first-round games, Fredonia defeated Tempe Prep 71-47, ending the season for the Knights.
Also, Rock Point defeated Surrey Garden 54-40, Salt River downed St. Michael 48-41. In other results, it was: Tucson Green Fields 50, Pima 46 (OT); Fort Thomas 72, Patagonia 42; Joseph City 54, Valley Lutheran 33; Superior 51, St. David 47; and Duncan 40, Augustine 20.
3A Girls
In the first round Wednesday night, Round Valley defeated Monument Valley 47-46; Chinley downed Alchesay 51-48 and Ganado topped Holbrook 57-36.
