Fountain Hills couldn’t turn turnovers into points Friday night.

The visiting Falcons created three turnovers but fell to Goodyear Estrella Foothills 9-6 in 3A football action.

“We shot ourselves in the foot,” Fountain Hills coach Jim Fairfield said. “We got down there ready to score and had a field goal blocked and they ran it back.”

Fountain Hills (0-2) had several scoring opportunities in the second half but had a pass intercepted in the end zone and the field goal blocked that led to an Estrella Foothills (2-0) score.

“We had our opportunities,” Fairfield said. “We have a good team, and we have a lot of kids right now that are not suited up, but we are biding our time.”

The Falcons were handed a gift late in the fourth quarter when Nathan Shooks picked up a wayward punt and returned it to the Wolves’ 21-yard line. The Estrella Foothills punter inadvertently hit the up man square in the back.

Five plays later, backup quarterback Rainer Greenstreet scored on a 1-yard dive with 3:03 left. Greenstreet was filling in for Conner Brinton, who was sidelined with a cracked bone in his foot, said Fairfield.

The Falcons missed the extra point. They then lined up for an onside kick, but elected to pooch-kick the ball, and Estrella Foothills wasn’t fooled. The Wolves fielded the kick and ran out the clock in four plays.

Greenstreet finished 6-for-15 for 82 yards and an interception.

Beau Higlemann lead the Fountain Hills rushing attack with 73 yards on 19 carries.

Alex Forehand had an interception early in the third quarter, but a Greenstreet fade pass was picked off in the end zone.

The Fountain Hills defense was stingy, holding Estrella Foothills to 146 total yards.
