ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Julie Hershkowitz

Seton's outside hitter was named co-MVP of the Highland Invitational last Saturday after turning in a strong performance, one of many for the Sentinels, in the title match vs. Chandler.

BEST OF THE REST

Football: Desert Ridge quarterback Clay Busch piled up 489 yards of offense and accounted for seven touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 51-29 victory over Skyline High.

Volleyball: Arcadia was minus a pair of starters but still managed a respectable runner-up finish to top-rated Phoenix Sunnyslope Saturday in the Cactus Shadows Invitational at Cactus Shadows High School.

Cross country: McClintock's John Yatsko took medalist honors Saturday at the Padres Invitational at Kiwanis Park. Yatsko covered the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 29 seconds.

Also on Saturday, Arcadia's Reed Blochberger had the best time at the Thunderbird Classic at Mesa's Riverview Park. Blochberger won in 15:57.6.

Seton Catholic's Andrew Belus had a strong run Saturday at the Shane C. Morris Invitational at Pinetop, finishing second in 16:35.

Boys golf: Red Mountain's boys rallied on the second day of play to win the Brophy Grayhawk Invitational on Saturday, with the Mountain Lions' Jeff Eggen taking medalist honors via tiebreaker. Eggen was 3-under par for the 27-hole tournament.

Girls golf: Hamilton sisters Sebin and Sehee Kim led a balanced foursome for Hamilton, which won the Prescott Invitational at Antelope Hills South Course in Prescott on Saturday. The Kims and Nicole Dunham finished third, fifth and 10th in guiding the Huskies to a 35-shot victory over Red Mountain.

LOOKING AHEAD

VOLLEYBALL

Today: Mesa at Mountain View, 6:30 p.m.: The 5A East Valley Region's top two combatants meet for the first of two region battles. Mesa (third in 5A Division I power-point rankings) and the Toros (sixth in power-point rankings) are tied for first in the region at 2-0.

Other key games:

Today

Desert Vista at Mountain Pointe;

Gilbert at Chandler;

Thursday

Apache Junction at Queen Creek;

Highland at Chandler, all at 6 p.m.

SWIMMING

9 a.m. Saturday: The best teams in boys (Brophy) and girls (Xavier) host nearly a dozen East Valley schools at Phoenix Brophy Prep. The boys will swim in the North pool, girls in the South pool.

GOLF

Aguila Invitational (boys), Friday and Saturday: Two-day event hosted by Horizon will be played at Aguila Golf Club in Laveen.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday: Prestigious Doug Conley Invitational hosted by Tempe High and contested at Kiwanis Park. Only the top 20 schools in the state, regardless of class, are invited, along with seven individuals not on those teams. The event is a good gauge in finding out who will emerge as the top teams at the state meets.
