Softball: Arcadia’s Liebler pitches perfect game

Phoenix Arcadia’s Paula Liebler handled Flagstaff Sinagua’s batters by throwing a 15-strikeout perfect game, her second of the season, as the Titans beat the Eagles 7-0 in the first round of the 4A-II state softball tournament Saturday at Arcadia. Liebler (11-2) did not allow a ball out of the infield. Erika Keil hit a two-run homer for Arcadia.


PHOENIX ST. MARY’S 10, GILBERT 0: Dallas Escobedo threw all five innings, allowing only one hit and striking out 13 batters at Rose Mofford Sports Complex. She also went 2-for-3, including an RBI double and a two-run home run. The Knights’ Molly Smith recorded three hits and knocked in two runs.

PHOENIX XAVIER 6, GLENDALE MOUNTAIN RIDGE 5: After surrendering a one-run lead to the Mountain Lions in the top half of the seventh inning, the Gators (28-7) responded with Amity Tello’s walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning at Rose Mofford. Stephanie Janes threw the complete-game victory. The Gators’ Lauren MacCollum made two diving catches to help preserve the victory.


PINNACLE 2, ANTHEM BOULDER CREEK 1: The Pioneers advanced in the loser’s bracket with a win over the Jaguars at Rose Mofford Sports Complex.

OTHER GAMES: Glendale Deer Valley beat Glendale Ironwood 7-0, and Peoria Sunrise Mountain beat Tucson Sunnyside 2-1.


CHAPARRAL 6, APACHE JUNCTION 0: Kennedy Byxbee had three hits, including a hard-hit double that just fell short of clearing the fence, and drove in three runs as the host Firebirds topped the Prospectors. Tessa Braga went 3-for-4 and stole two bases, and Rae Ball (10-4) struck out seven in seven innings for Chaparral. Katie Corbin had two hits for Apache Junction.

OTHER GAMES: Tucson Canyon del Oro beat Glendale Apollo, 15-0; Tucson Sabino beat Phoenix Sunnyslope, 2-1; Glendale Sandra Day O’Connor beat Tucson Catalina Foothills, 4-1; Vail Cienega beat Goodyear Millennium, 6-0; Peoria beat Glendale Cactus, 5-1; and Tucson Sahuaro beat Lake Havasu, 4-0.


FLAGSTAFF 7, QUEEN CREEK 6: Cassi Jones went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Kristin Martin knocked in the game-winning run with the bases loaded in the eight-inning victory for the host Eagles.

Meghan Hoppes led the offense for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

PHOENIX GREENWAY 5, TEMPE 2: The 11th-seeded Buffaloes’ season ended at the hands of the host Demons.

SETON CATHOLIC 10, NOTRE DAME 0: Olivia Bergman threw a no-hitter to push the host Sentinels past the Saints in six innings. Bergman struck out 10 and walked one. Kelsey Rodrigues and Kelly Carrieres each had two hits, and Megan Johnson drove in two runs for Seton Catholic (23-6).

OTHER FIRST-ROUND GAMES: Douglas beat Bullhead City Mohave 3-1; Glendale Raymond Kellis beat Tucson Amphitheater 1-0; Cottonwood Mingus beat Buckeye 7-1; and Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain beat Sahuarita 3-2.


In quarterfinal action at Rose Mofford, Winslow beat Safford 6-4; Eloy Santa Cruz beat Snowflake 6-2; Window Rock beat Show Low 6-4; and Wickenburg beat Lakeside Blue Ridge 4-1.


In quarterfinal action at Rose Mofford, Tucson Pusch Ridge beat St. Johns 7-2; Phoenix Northwest Christian beat Phoenix Bourgade Catholic 1-0; San Manuel topped Willcox 2-1; and Benson beat Miami 2-0.


ELFRIDA VALLEY UNION 12, SALT RIVER 2: The Eagles’ season and recent offensive outburst came to an end in the state quarterfinals at Rose Mofford.

In other quarterfinal action at Rose Mofford, Joseph City beat Phoenix Valley Lutheran 6-0; Bagdad beat Williams 13-3; and Pima beat Mogollon 4-3.
