State volleyball roundup: Valley Christian advances in 2A tourney

Alaina Bergsma had 14 kills and Ali Gentry added 18 assists as Valley Christian defeated Miami 25-14, 25-20 on Thursday in the second round of the 2A state volleyball tournament at Glendale Raymond S. Kellis High.

Kim Wigboldy finished with five kills and two aces for the Trojans.

"They (Miami) like to play with a slow pace, but we sped up the game and executed very well," Valley Christian coach Jennifer Wiechertjes said.

The Trojans (25-16) will play Thatcher at 2:30 p.m. today at Glendale Arena in the quarterfinals.

Earlier Thursday, Valley Christian beat Many Farms, 25-12, 25-16, in first-round action.

Bergsma had 12 kills and two aces, Gentry added 15 assists and Wigboldy had six kills, and two aces.

"Alaina was huge for us in both games tonight," Wiechertjes said.

SCOTTSDALE CHRISTIAN def. SAN MANUEL, 25-5, 25-20: At Raymond S. Kellis High School, Jordan Albertson had five aces and 18 assists and Kirsten Johnson added seven aces and two kills to help the Eagles advance to the quarterfinals of the 2A state tournament.

Julie Gould also contributed with nine kills for Scottsdale Christian.

TUCSON PUSCH RIDGE def. MARICOPA, 25-9, 25-13: At Raymond S. Kellis, the Rams were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by the Lions.

OTHER SCORES: In other 2A first-round matches, Tombstone defeated Williams, 25-22, 25-11 and Thatcher beat Wellton Antelope 25-18, 25-9.

In second-round action, Tombstone edged Yuma Catholic in three games, 25-14, 22-25, 25-23; Benson was a 26-24, 25-20 winner over Pusch Ridge Christian; Arizona Lutheran defeated Teec No Pos Red Mesa, 25-14, 25-16; St. Johns advanced with a 25-17, 24-26, 25-16 win over Morenci; and Phoenix Northwest Christian eliminated Sells Baboquivari, 25-10, 25-7.

CORRECTION: A report in Thursday’s Tribune should have stated that Glendale Mountain Ridge defeated Basha, 25-19, 25-23, in a 5A state volleyball tournament first round match.
