VX Roundup 12/9: Jones leads Basha into SW Rotary championship game

Basha squeaked past Centennial (Nevada), 69-67, in the Southwest Rotary Classic at Cibola High School in Yuma on Friday.

The Bears (6-0) trailed 60-51 entering the final quarter but Torren Jones led Basha back with a furious run to beat the Bulldogs.

Previously-unbeaten Centennial is the second ranked team in Nevada by MaxPreps.com.

Jones finished with 26 points to lead all scorers in the game, Jaron Hopkins finished with 16 points and Nathan Markovich added 11.

The Bears will play in the championship game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against another Nevada school.

In a matchup of rival schools, host-Higley narrowly defeated Williams Field, 40-36. Tanner Lee led the Knights (5-1) with 12 points. Kyle Gomez finished with eight points and 10 rebounds and Quinn Bailey added eight points and 11 rebounds. Hayden Allen led Williams Field with 14 points.

D.J. Henderson led Mesa with 29 points as the Jackrabbits beat Marcos de Niza, 78-75. Desmond Medder added 21 points for Mesa. Avery Brunson led the Padres with 22 points and Richaud Gittens added 18 points.

Mountain View got past St. Mary's, 66-59. Camyn Boone led the Toros (4-1) with 26 points and Mitch Wallace added 20. Derrick Bowers led the Knights with 20 points.

Visiting Tempe beat Saguaro, 83-72. Erik Carr and Nyial Watson led the Buffaloes (4-4) with 17 points each. Watson also added four assists and three steals. Cliff Marg led the Sabercats with 23 points and Mike Hauser added 22.

Girls Basketball

Katherine Hamilton led visiting Dobson past Corona del Sol, 72-58. Hamilton finished with a near-triple-double: 23 points, 13 rebounds, eight steals and five assists. Tori Lloyd added 17 points and nine assists for the Mustangs.

Horizon beat host-Desert Mountain, 59-42. Madison Austin led the Huskies with 24 points and Rachael Goodman added 14. Kasey McCravey led the Wolves with 15 points and Carly Rose added 12.

Gabrielle Evans led host Arcadia past Phoenix Shadow Mountain, 59-32. Evans finished with 15 points, Taylor Steger added 14 points and Gianna Grumbein contributed 12 for the Titans (9-1).
