Tuesday hoops recap: Ridge boys top Tolleson

BOYS BASKETBALL

Mountain Ridge took an early 18-10 edge in the first quarter and didn't look back in its 81-77 season opening win against Tolleson. Jarred Zoller led the Mountain Lions with 25 points, while Tolleson's Shane Kozup paced all scorers with 28.

Willow Canyon dropped its first game of the season, a 70-62 loss to Carl Hayden. The Falcons got 22 points from Jose Figueroa to lead all scorers and Bryan Rhymes added 21. CJ Crockem and Josh Jones paced the Wildcats with 16 points each.

Jumping out to an early 24-9 lead after the first quarter, Dysart cruised to a 73-46 win over Scottsdale Coronado for its second straight victory.

Behind Tyler Larson's game high 19 points, Scottsdale Horizon held on against Ironwood for a 71-65 win. Justin Hortz led Eagle scorers with 18 points.

Maryvale got 23 points from Marcus Ayala in a 72-59 win against Valley Vista. Jameel Yousis had 14 points to lead the Monsoon. Dalvin Brown also had 18 rebounds for the Panthers.

Phoenix North opened an 11-point halftime lead and coasted to a 79-46 win against Centennial. Daniel Bejarano led all scorers with 19 points. Nick Bartimioli paced the Coyotes with 15 points.

After dropping three straight at the Arrowhead Desert Classic last week, Peoria found the winning side of the ledger in a 55-42 win against Kellis.

Liberty fought back from a 10-point halftime deficit in its inaugural varsity season, climbing to within two at the end of third quarter but falling in the end, 62-54, against Gilbert Perry. Chase Richardson led both squads with 17 points. Herb Dew led the Lions with 14.

After leading by 10 at halftime, Sunrise Mountain was held to five points in the third quarter, but used a 27-12 fourth for a 64-51 win against Camelback.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cactus opened its season with a 52-47 win over nearby 4A-II Phoenix Greenway.

Jennifer Lee had 20 points to help propel visiting Horizon to a 64-55 victory over Glendale Ironwood.

Despite 16-10 fourth quarter edge, Sunrise Mountain dropped its second straight game, and first regular season matchup, in a 47-44 loss to Camelback.

Coming off a 2-3 showing at the Moon Valley Invitational, Centennial held on to a 39-34 win against North.

Dysart was outscored 52-32 in the second half against Scottsdale Coronado in a 76-69 loss.

Deer Valley was held to single digit scoring each quarter as Mountain View (Mesa) easily claimed a 53-30 win over the Skyhawks. Jennifer Schlott scored 15 points to lead both sides, while Sam Rassmussenn led Deer Valley with 14. The Toros' Britney Conger also had 10 rebounds and seven steals in the win.

Tolleson allowed just eight first half points, and 15 through three quarters, in a 54-25 win against Mountain Ridge. Rebecca Woodberry scored 18 to lead the Wolverines and Andrea Owens added 16 in the winning effort.
