Pick your poison when swimming against Scottsdale Notre Dame. Freshmen Alex and Ben Brouwer have been carving up the competition.
Ben Brouwer won four events (200 freestyle twice, 100 free, 100 backstroke) last week in meets against Phoenix schools Cortez and Greenway.

Most small schools don’t field swimming and diving teams, and those that do must compete against teams often several times their size. Tiny Surrey Garden in Gilbert, enrollment 100, beat 3A school Coolidge in a girls meet earlier this year, and Chandler Valley Christian, enrollment 400, routinely outdoes much larger schools.
The Trojans’ boys team is 5-0 in tri-meets this season, having beaten 4A-I Glendale Independence, 4A-II Scottsdale Coronado, 4A-II Queen Creek, 4A-II Chandler Perry and 3A Sedona Red Rock. The girls have beaten Red Rock, Perry, Coronado and Queen Creek and placed second in two other tri-meets.
Diver travels: Phoenix Xavier’s Marissa Johnson, a Mesa resident, is one of Arizona’s top recruits. The defending 5A-I state champ competed in the diving portion of the Brophy-Xavier Invitational on Thursday and then was scheduled to jump on a plane and make a collegiate visit to Indiana. In October — in between the Nike Invitational in Tucson and some region meets — she is set to make trips to Nebraska, North Carolina and ASU. “If I love the coach but don’t feel like I fit in, then I am not going to go there,” Johnson said.
Johnson has never finished below third in the state meet and placed in the USA Diving Spring Junior West Nationals this summer.
Brophy/Xavier Invite: More than 34 teams will compete Saturday at Brophy East.
