Talk about some big shoes to fill.
Perry assistant principal and athletic director Marcus Williams was named the next Chandler Unified School District Athletic Director.
Williams will take over for John Carlson, who's retiring at the end of the school year after more than 40 years as a coach (wrestling, football, baseball and track), teacher and athletic director. This is his 23rd year as the Chandler district athletic director.
Williams was a McClintock graduate who played football at Arizona State, and a couple brief stints in Europe and professionally. He returned to the Valley and became a teacher and coach of various sports at Marcos de Niza, then went to Williams Field as the athletic director when the school opened in 2007.
He's been at Perry since former A.D. John Wrenn left for Arizona State in 2010.
Carlson was inducted into the Arizona Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Arizona Coaches Association High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995, not to mention national administrative awards in 2000 and 2004.
The district is constructing a new elementary named after him and wife wife, Carol. She's also been an educator in the district for more than 30 years.
