A look ahead at this week’s 5A-I boys state basketball tournament semifinals:

No. 3 Cesar Chavez (25-3) vs. No. 2 Mountain View (25-4)

When: 6 p.m. Tuesday

Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Tempe

Outlook: Mountain View survived a scare against No. 7 seed Mountain Pointe in the quarterfinals, as a key Tyson Lane steal and assist late in the fourth quarter rescued the Toros. Now they will face off against Phoenix Cesar Chavez, an explosive, athletic group that had its way with No. 6 Basha. The Champions are led by Brandon Brown, a quick point guard who can also shoot from long range. These two teams faced off late in the regular season, when Cesar Chavez controlled the game early and grabbed a 10-point lead in the third quarter before Mountain View stormed back for a seven-point win. Asaad Woods had a big game against Cesar Chavez the first time around, and he will be counted on to do so again.

No. 9 St. Mary’s (20-9) vs. No. 4 North (26-3)

When: 7:45 p.m. Tuesday

Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Tempe

Outlook: St. Mary’s never believed it was a low seed, and its play has proved it so far. The Knights cruised past Hamilton in the first round and then toppled No. 1 seed Mesa in the quarterfinals. St. Mary’s is the defending champion and now has a real chance at a repeat. North won the 5A-II title last season, and with Arizona-bound Daniel Bejarano leading the way, the Mustangs were expected to be in the mix again this season. They beat Brophy by a bucket in the first round and held on against Corona del Sol in the quarterfinals. These two teams met in the season opener and North won by eight, but the Knights are playing better at this point.
