After a heartbreaking loss to Peoria Centennial last week, Mesa Mountain View (1-1) rebounded in a big way at home Friday, beating Phoenix South Mountain 72-8.

Andy Centner started the engine seven seconds into the game with a safety for two points. Also scoring early was Steve Frost on a 43-yard blocked punt return in the first two minutes of the game.

Micah Yetter and Riley Nielsen each scored a pair of first-half touchdowns for the Toros, who had nine different players score TDs against the Jaguars (0-2).

The Mountain View defensive line, which held the Jaguars inside their own territory until late in the first half, paved the way for a solid rushing offense to score seemingly at will.

Riley Nielsen, the Toros' senior quarterback, led the offense to an impressive first-half score of 59-0, including his own 25- and 80-yard touchdown runs in the second quarter.

Nielson and his teammates used last week's loss as motivation to work hard and get ready for the road ahead.

"We were all pumped and ready to go tonight," Nielsen said. "We have a tough couple of weeks ahead, and we really wanted to win to get ready for those games."

Also contributing to the Mountain View score were Ridge Nielsen with a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, and kicker Kyle Jenkins, who made 8 of 9 PAT attempts.

The lone scorer for the Jaguars was Tariq Smith on a 50-yard pass from Robert Benjamin near the end of the third quarter.

The Toros go on the road next week to face Phoenix Desert Vista.
