Mesa Desert Ridge scored on five of its first six possessions Friday night and went on to clobber Avondale La Joya 48-17 and notch the first win for new coach Jeremy Hathcock in a 5A nonregion game at Desert Ridge.
Desert Ridge quarterback Clay Busch passed for 257 yards and four touchdowns in a game dominated from start to finish by the Jaguars.
Busch connected three times for scores to wideout Justin Murray, who caught six passes for 116 yards. The other TD pass went to C.J. Hunt, which capped Desert Ridge's 35-point first half.
Running back Chris Heldore added two short rushing TDs for Desert Ridge, which outgained La Joya 339-222.
