After multiple years of getting recruited by some of the better men's basketball programs on the West Coast, it took Casey Benson less than a week to decide on his college commitment.

The Corona del Sol star boys basketball point guard weighed his options for the past five days before verbally committing to Oregon on Sunday night, choosing the Ducks over Gonzaga, New Mexico, Stanford, Colorado, Saint Mary's and several others.

"Obviously it's a great program," Benson said. "They have great coaches. They went to the Sweet Sixteen this year. It just felt right."

Benson was the Tribune's Player of the Year this past season after averaging 20.7 points, 3.7 assists, 3.4 rebounds and leading the Aztecs to a second straight Division I state championship.

He said the ability to play immediately and join the Pac-12 were both factors.

"Playing in the Pac-12 has always been a dream of mine," he said. "After growing up and watching the Pac-12, it's very, very cool and exciting."

Benson's current Corona del Sol teammate Connor MacDougall, a senior power forward, is verbally committed to Arizona State. Benson said he's looking forward to playing in-state against the Sun Devils and the University of Arizona when he gets to Oregon.

"It's obviously a cool thing to come back to your hometown and play," Benson said.

Creighton and Nebraska were also among the leaders for Benson's services before he chose the Ducks. He is rated as a three-star point guard and the 145th-best senior in the nation by
