02/04 - Boys basketball roundup: Yuma edges Marcos de Niza

Yuma, winless in 5A Central Region play coming into Tuesday’s game at Marcos de Niza, went on a fourthquarter scoring binge, erasing a nine-point deficit and holding on for a 66-65 win.

The Criminals (9-9, 1-5) knocked the Padres (12-9, 3-2) down to a tie for second place in the region with Desert Vista. Mountain Pointe, a winner over Corona del Sol on Tuesday, is now the leader with a 4-2 region mark.

Anthony Quintero led all scorers with 25 points to lead Yuma. Michael Broom led Marcos de Niza with 23 points.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 74, WESTWOOD 49: The Toros rolled past the visiting Warriors in a 5A East Valley game. Max Hall led all scorers with 15 points for Mountain View (21-1, 8-1). Cesar Moreno led Westwood (9-12, 4-5) with 13 points.

HIGLEY 59, QUEEN CREEK 41: The Knights had three players in double figures, led by Trae Valenzuela’s 14 points, as they beat the host Bulldogs (8-18, 3-11) in 3A South Region play. Brent Beirdneau added 12 points for Higley (16-8, 9-6).

GLENDALE MOUNTAIN RIDGE 62, HORIZON 47: Desmond Jones scored 11 points as the Huskies (16-7) fell to the host Mountain Lions in a 5A non-region game.

DOBSON 73, YUMA CIBOLA 40: The host Mustangs (17-7, 5-4) topped the Raiders in a 5A East Valley Region game. Jason Sherrer led Dobson with 13 points.

DESERT MOUNTAIN 75, YUMA KOFA 52: Chad Goldstein scored 17 points to lead the host Wolves over the Kings in a 5A Desert Valley Region matchup. Zach Greenberg led all scorers with 18 points for Desert Mountain (11-10, 4-5).

MESA 67, SKYLINE 53: Lee Cummard had 22 points to lead the host Jackrabbits (19-2, 10-0) past the Coyotes (0-10 region) in a 5A East Valley Region game.

HIGHLAND 74, MESQUITE 54:

Derek Bailey scored 17 points for the Hawks over the host Wildcats. Saunders Montague scored 17 points for Mesquite.

COOLIDGE 69, SETON CATHOLIC 64: The Bears overcame a 24-point deficit to upset the top ranked Sentinels in a 3A South Region matchup. Oscar Palacios scored 21 points for Coolidge (15-11, 8-7) and Drew Arnold had 19 for Seton Catholic (13-2 3A South).

TEMPE 71, ARCADIA 67: J.T. Tucker had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead the Buffaloes (9-16 2-9) over the Titans in 4A East Sky play.

CHANDLER 86, CASA GRANDE 69:

Joe Shaw led the visiting Wolves with a game-high 29 points in a 5A Fiesta Region victory over the Cougars (0-7 region). Justin Thompson scored 10 points for Chandler (12-9, 3-4).

DESERT VISTA 55, RED MOUNTAIN 49: Xavier Kilby scored 25 points for the Thunder (13-11) as they defeated the visiting Mountain Lions in a 5A non-region game.

DESERT RIDGE 59, CHAPARRAL 55:

Eric Cunningham scored 21 points as the visiting Jaguars defeated the Firebirds in a 4A East Sky Region matchup. Andrew Cunningham added 12 points for Desert Ridge (13-14, 5-7). Andrew Washko led all scorers with 26 points for Chaparral (15-8, 8-3).

SCOTTSDALE CHRISTIAN 74, PHOENIX BOURGADE 55: Tim Maiden scored 28 points and dished out seven assists as the host Eagles (24-1, 11-1 2A Metro Region) beat Bourgade. Alex Rogers added 12 points for Scottsdale Christian.

MOUNTAIN POINTE 59, CORONA DEL SOL 49: Adam Arreola scored 19 points to lead the Pride over the visiting Aztecs in a 5A Central Region matchup. Dan Winterbottom and Clayton Bates each scored 15 points for Corona del Sol (15-7, 3-3).

SAGUARO 69, APACHE JUNCTION 66: The Sabercats (20-5, 11-0) got 25 points from Danny O’Boyle and 21 from Justin Ashbaugh to beat the host Prospectors (16-10, 5-6) in a 4A East Sky Region game. Steve Elman led all scorers with 27 points for the Prospectors.

GILBERT 44, HAMILTON 42: Arturo Donzella led the way with 14 points as the Tigers (13-10, 4-3) upended host Hamilton (12-10, 5-2) in overtime in a 5A Fiesta Region contest. Roy Prieto led the Huskies with 13 points.

MCCLINTOCK 77, PHOENIX MOON VALLEY 48: Jermaine Calvin scored 25 points and Gabe Freeman added 21 for the Chargers (21-3, 11-1) as they defeated the host Rockets in the final game of 4A Skyline Region play.

PHOENIX GREENWAY 59, NOTRE DAME 35: John Black and Scott Mueller each scored 13 points to lead the undefeated Demons (22-0, 12-0) over the host Saints in a 4A Desert Sky Region matchup.
