Address: 1001 E. Knox Road, Tempe; Records: Basha 6-2, 1-1 Central Region; Corona del Sol 3-5, 0-2; Gametime: 7:00 p.m.

Outlook:

Following Basha’s 27-10 loss to Mountain Pointe to open region play, coach Tim McBurney said the word playoffs was offlimits around his team, adding that the Bears would be fighting strictly to get there.

That fight might be a big easier, with Basha entering this week eighth in 5A power points, but don’t expect McBurney to change his mind. A chance to host a firstround playoff game is incentive enough for the upstart Bears to not take anyone — especially a dangerous Corona del Sol team — lightly.

With Jeff Whitlock joining Danny Keenan to create a two-headed backfield monster for the Bears, look for McBurney to open up his team’s spread-option offense and attempt to run past the Aztecs, who gave up 337 yards to Mountain Pointe’s Michael Moore in a loss last week.

At 3-5, Corona likely needs to win out — against Basha and Marcos de Niza — to finish .500 and have any shot at the playoffs.
