Big match for Chandler's Sheffield: Junior Cassie Sheffield scored four goals to go along with three assists Wednesday to lead visiting Chandler to a 9-1 victory over Westwood in a 5A II nonregion girls soccer match.

This was Sheffield's first game as a member of the Wolves as she had to sit out last year because she transferred.

Dani Saunders added a hat trick and Lauren Terrell contributed two goals for the Wolves (1-0). Cindy Bojorquez scored the only goal for the Warriors in defeat. . . .


Phoenix Washington handled visiting Higley by defeating the Knights 6-0. Danica Webb scored four goals in the victory. Carissa LaSever and Brooke Behlen scored a goal apiece. . . .

Elizabeth Warren, Mariah Huennekke and Devin Garcia each scored as host Basha defeated Yuma Kofa 3-0 in their season opener. Nicole Carbajal had four saves in the shutout for the Bears. . . .

Jalene Brandoin, Mari Greenberg and Kelly Block scored all three goals for Desert Mountain as it defeated visiting Mesquite 3-2 in a 5A-II match. Kimmie Fiever scored both Wildcats goals. . . .

Ashley Fredrickson scored the lone Coyotes goal midway through the second half to break a scoreless tie as Skyline shut out visiting Anthem Boulder Creek 1-0 in a 5A-II match. . . .

Freshman Hailey Hayes recorded seven saves to record a shutout in her first career start as Corona del Sol defeated Horizon on the road 1-0. Brittany Cole scored the lone goal for the Aztecs. . . .

Katie Shepard and Karrie Whigham had two goals apiece as host Desert Vista shut out Mountain View 5-0 in a 5A nonregion match. Shepard also had an assist for the Thunder (2-0). Lauren Mitchell got the shutout for the Thunder. . . . Led by Erica Long 's hat trick, Mountain Pointe defeated host Gilbert 3-0. Alexandra Elston assisted on all three Pride goals. . . . Dobson won its season opener 4-0 by defeating visiting Peoria Sunrise Mountain.

Trinity Houk had a hat trick and Shawn-Tae Greene scored the other goal for the Mustangs.


Obedd Fuentes scored 18 seconds into the match to give Tempe an early lead, and went on to defeat host Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain 3-0.

Juan Reyes added two goals and Saul Garcia had two assists for the Buffaloes. Giovanni O'Campo recorded six saves for Tempe. . . .

Bryce Albertsman got his first career shutout as Skyline blanked Phoenix North Canyon 2-0 at the Deer Valley Tournament at Glendale Deer Valley High School. Anthony Crum and Willy Artega scored goals for the Coyotes.


Samantha Russell scored 18 points to lead Chaparral to a 57-27 victory over Arcadia on the road. The Firebirds held the Titans scoreless in the first quarter to jump out to an early lead which they never lost. . . .

Led by Meagan Haupo's double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds led visiting Saguaro past Coronado 56-26. Rachel Huttilston also scored 13 points for the Sabercats.. . . Shaya Harrison's 17 points helped host Tempe beat Phoenix Sunnyslope 47-33. . . . Kristy Krause poured in 30 points to lead Pinnacle to a 63-48 win over Glendale Apollo at home.

"She really drove to the basket hard," Pioneers coach Jackie Van Patten said of Krause. Michelle Berry added in 14 points for the Pioneers. Stephanie Fogel was the leading scorer for the Hawks with 16 points. . . .

Host Queen Creek beat Flagstaff Coconino 39-29 in a 4A nonregion game. Courtney Adolf had eight points, six rebounds, and four steals to lead the Bulldogs (4-2).


Tom Fow had 25 points and seven rebounds as host Notre Dame Prep beat Goodyear Desert Edge 62-45 in a 4A nonregion game. The Saints (5-1) led by one at halftime but had a strong third quarter and outscored Desert Edge 19-8 to take control of the game. Sam King had 10 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, and Matt Coakley added 10 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.


Desert Mountain beat Mesa Mountain Ridge 40-29, and also beat Phoenix North 42-38 in 5A nonregion competition.
