A relentless, smothering allowed No. 6 Dobson to overcome a slow first quarter and defeat No. 11 Millennium 69-49 in the second round of the girls Division I basketball championship Friday night.

Miyah Leith chipped in 19 points and Katherine Hamilton added 18 as well for Dobson, who advance to face No. 3 Pinnacle in the quarterfinals on Monday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Mustangs did not play well in the first quarter. They allowed 15 points, only two less than they would allow in the second and third quarters combined.

Dobson would score 15 points themselves in the quarter to find themselves tied, despite their poor start.

"When we played Hamilton in the sectionals, we got out and were real aggressive, but we got into some quick foul trouble," Mustangs coach Tyler Dumas said. "So the

game plan was to sit back and adjust to the officiating as it goes, not that it was good or bad, but we just wanted to see how it would be called. And then we wanted to make our run."

Dobson certainly did. The Mustangs started the second quarter on a 16-0 run to balloon their lead to 31-15. Dobson picked up the defensive pressure, holding Millennium without a field goal for nearly seven minutes dating back to the first quarter.

The Mustangs started employing a full-court press that really flustered the Tigers and took them out of their comfort zone. Millennium never looked comfortable offensively from that point on. They turned the ball over numerous times and rarely ever gotten into their offensive sets.

"About halfway through the first quarter we went back and went to some half-court man-to-man and tried to take away their little freshman guard (Raina Perez)," Dumas said. "She's a really nice player for a freshman. She hurt us getting to the basket a little bit. We wanted to take her away and make other kids try and make plays. That really helped us. We executed that and then we switched defenses a lot."

The Mustangs would take a 41-26 lead into halftime and didn't let up a bit in the third quarter, holding the Tigers to just six points the whole quarter. Millennium did not have a field goal in the last 6:06 of the period.

Offensively, Dobson was led by Tori Lloyd who had a big night with 24 points. Lloyd had 11 of those points in the first quarter to help keep the Mustangs in the game when they were struggling to score.

"She's just really developing," Dumas said of Lloyd. "She's always been the type of player she is now, it's just sometimes it's a little bit of a process ad she has been continuing to develop not only the confidence, but the outside shot as well. She has the ability to get to the basket and to draw fouls as well."
