The first of three rounds went to Corona de Sol.

Two of the top state contenders in Division I boys cross country went head-to-head on Saturday at Kiwanis Park as the Aztecs beat Desert Vista in the Tempe City meet by placing five runners in the top seven slots.

The Thunder had four in the top nine, but it just wasn’t enough this time as the teams push toward sectionals next week and the state meet the following week.

“It was a tough race today,” Desert Vista sophomore Xavier Esparza said. “We didn’t keep our pack together and (CDS) were able to get their fourth and fifth runners in their before we did. We have to do a better job of that if we want to win it.”

Corona’s Nathan Rodriguez won it in 15:40.17, while Ryan Normand and Marcus Wheeler finished at 15:47.37 and 16:10.14.

DV was led Esparza came in at 16:24.39 with Jacob Walimma (16:37.83), Kyle Havriliak (16:49.42) and Ben Davis (16:52.62) finishing in the top as well.

Corona won it with 18 points, DV had 40 followed by McClintock (94), Mountain Pointe (105) and Marcos de Niza (119). Tempe High did not compete.

The Pride was led by Triston Yellowman, who finished 15th with a time of 18:13.40, and was followed by Sam Jewel (18:42.65) and Jack Amodei (18:52.66) as the only Mountain Pointe athletes to go sub-19 minutes.

“I’m getting stronger as the season goes on,” said Yellowman, who moved in from Tuba City. “We have two more weeks and I want to finish strong.”

The Thunder girls continued to roll as they took the team title handily as the fourth through seventh runners essentially finished at the same time after Dani and Baylee Jones finished first and second, respectively, and Nicole Hicks was fourth overall.

Dani Jones finished in 19:15.00, while Baylee was at 19:24.37 with Hicks at 19:49.50.

The “sisterhood” of Madi Bucci (20:42.48), Sabrina Camino (20:42.48), Emily Smith (20:42.55) and Amanda Davis (20:42.85) all came around the final turn running side by side to finish sixth through ninth overall.

The Thunder won it with 20 points with Corona second with 45 behind third-place Kelly Naumann (19.33.16) and fifth-place Mason Swenson (20:13.57).

Mountain Pointe (77), McClintock (112) and Marcos de Niza (112) rounded out the field.

The Pride was led by Ramsay Chancellor (21:15.34) and Francesca Olguin (21:15.66) finished 11th and 12, respectively, while Kassidy Conroy (22:29.90), Madi Kuyper (22:38.21) and Cimone Isbell (23:33.33) all finished in the top 20.

“The girls have been very focused and dedicated all season,” Pride coach Grant Sinclair said. “They’ve been making strides and developing all year in order to peak at this time of the year.”

The teams head to the sectional meet next week and state meet on Nov. 9 at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix.
