Address: 2820 W. Rose Garden Lane, Phoenix

Records: Corona del Sol 2-3; Goldwater 3-2

Outlook: Thanks to injuries, Corona del Sol has just 28 of its 38 varsity players dressing and will even pull up a few from junior varsity, coach Gary Venturo said. “We are hit everywhere. It’s unbelievable,” Venturo said. “It’s just something that’s happened I guess. We’ve never had it in my 19 years.”

On the plus side for the Aztecs, region play waits one more week as they complete their non-region schedule this week. Venturo said the opportunity to get more kids on the field is a positive but added that Goldwater, which lost 39-7 to Phoenix North Canyon a week ago, is a bigger team across the board than his Aztecs.

Injuries aside, Venturo said he couldn’t be more pleased with the effort his players gave in the team’s 13-10 loss to St. Mary’s last week.

“All you can ask for is for them to go out and give you a good game, and they did that,” he said. “I’ll take that from my kids any day. If we play like that the wins will come.”
