Matt McConnell scored nine of Dobson’s last 10 points Friday night, including six free throws in the final 38 seconds, as the Mustangs topped previously unbeaten and topranked Mountain View, 54-49, in boys basketball action at Mountain View.
McConnell finished with a team-high 16 points and younger brother Mickey McConnell added 14 as the Mustangs (24-6) defeated the Toros in the 5A East Valley Region championship game.
Matt McConnell’s field goals (three) were all from 3-point range.
Some good shooting in the first half by Eric Hagen (six of his eight points) helped Dobson to as much as an 11-point lead.
"We played well the last two nights and shot the ball pretty well, which always helps," Dobson coach Rick McConnell said.
Sophomore center Harper Kamp scored 14 of his gamehigh 20 points in the second half for Mountain View.
"We had a nice run," Mountain View coach Gary Ernst said of his team’s 27-0 record prior to Friday. "(Going undefeated) was something we never talked about this season. Give Dobson credit. They played well."
