Commander King has been chosen as Seton Catholic's new boys basketball coach, he said Thursday.
King was the interim coach at Chaparral this year for six games following the resignation of Aaron Windler before the season. He went 4-2 before being replaced by Damin Lopez.
King said Seton athletic director Bob Bitler called him this afternoon to deliver the news.
"I'm excited," he said. "It seems like a really good situation. There has been some success there in the past and I'm hoping to duplicate it and further it."
King coached at Flagstaff Coconino for seven years, compiling an overall record of 96-84. His wife, Jennifer, is an assistant coach for the girls varsity basketball team.
"It's a nice family atmosphere and I have familiarity with the program," King said.
Former Basha coach Brad Pinter was the other finalist for the job. Former McClintock coach Jase Coburn and former Mesquite coach Tom Saltzstein also were interviewed.
King replaces Ernie Pintor, who resigned in early May because of time constraints. Pintor went 104-72 in his six seasons as coach. Seton was 8-21 last season and did not qualify for the postseason.
King said he may meet with the players for the first time today.
