Athlete of the week: Kyle Ciliento - It was inevitable. The Phoenix Pinnacle senior was going to break the state scoring record at some point this season. It just happened sooner rather than later.

Ciliento became the state’s top career goal scorer on Wednesday when he recorded his 111th goal in a 3-0 win over Phoenix Cortez. Fernando Guana of Tucson Salpointe Catholic held the previous record at 110.

Ciliento entered the season with 100, but needed just four matches to reach 111. He has five goals in his past two games.

“We didn’t even start talking about the record until his junior year,” Pinnacle coach Brock Heykoop said. “The work he does on his own — away from club and high school — is what separates him.”

Beyond the box score

To the rescue: Jesus Navarez likes to score goals. But last week he was asked to stop a few, and the Tempe High sophomore rose to the occasion.

Navarez, normally a starting forward, moved to goalie for last week’s match against city rival McClintock. He responded by making 12 saves in Tempe’s 5-3 victory.

“I was nervous all day,” said Navarez, who filled in when the team’s starting goalie had to attend a family function in Texas.

Navarez said he felt comfortable after allowing a goal on a penalty kick. “I almost blocked it. After that I felt like I could really do this,” he said.

“If it wasn’t for Jesus, we would have been down by 10 at halftime,” Tempe coach Steve Cihomsky said.

Navarez returned to forward earlier this week and scored a goal in a 6-0 win over Flagstaff Coconino.

Chandler rolling: Chandler’s boys and girls are off to impressive starts. The girls (3-1-1) beat second-ranked Desert Vista, 1-0, in the Tempe Diablo Soccer Classic on Tuesday. The 10th-ranked boys are undefeated through five matches and advanced to the semifinals of the Diablo Tournament.

Piling on: Tempe Corona del Sol’s Brittany Cole became the school’s all-time leading goal scorer last week when she netted the 65th of her career. She already holds the school mark for career points and single-season scoring.

Looking ahead

Title time: The Tempe Diablo Soccer Classic boys and girls title matches are at 6 p.m. today at the Tempe Sports Complex. The final match in the girls Scottsdale Horizon Tournament is also at 6 p.m. today at Horizon.
