Cactus boys golf dominates tourney: The Cactus Cobras earned a 20 shot win at the Peoria Unified School District Golf Tournament at Union Hills Country Club in Sun City Sept. 29.

The Cobras were paced by the efforts of co-medalist Tyler Hazen. The senior fired an even par 72 on the 6,583 yard layout, good enough for a tie with Sunrise Mountain senior Kyle Kallan, who’s Mustangs finished in a tie for second.

With three players in the top five the Cobras 294 total bested Centennial and Sunrise Mountain, both of which finished at 314. Ironwood, at 322, was fourth, followed by Peoria, at 366 and Raymond Kellis at 394.

Cactus sophomore Eric Wojtcuk shot 73 to claim third. Peoria’s D.J. Heying, Cactus junior David Nichols and Centennial senior Matt Vasquez all shot 75 to round out the top five.

Cactus senior makes college choice

Cactus third baseman Montana Lucas, the starting third baseman for the Cobras 2003 and 2004 4A state softball championship teams, has verbally committed to the University of Nevado-Reno.

Lucas’ decision comes shortly after teammate Katie Holverson also chose to continue her softball career as a member of the Wolf Pack. During their first three seasons at Cactus Holverson and Lucas have helped the Cobras to a 99-4-1 record, three region titles and two state championships.

Individually Lucas, a four year-starter, is a career .399 hitter with 11 home runs, 27 doubles and 92 RBIs in 103 games.

Last season the first team Wells Fargo third baseman hit .444 (44-for-99), scoring 31 runs, with 30 RBIs in 32 games for the Cobras, who advanced to the 4A state quarterfinals before losing.
