No. 1 Pinnacle got a superb outing from starting pitcher Eric Melbostad, who allowed just two earned runs and struck out 10 in a 7-6 edging of No. 16 Vail Cienega on Tuesday in the second round of the Division I state tournament.

After cutting the Pioneers' lead to just one, the Bobcats had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and were looking to take their first lead of the game, but Melbostad got Matt Stewart to pop up to second to end the threat before securing the game in the seventh.

Alec Friedman went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Pioneers at the plate.

Pinnacle (17-11-1) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Cienega battled back and scored a run in the second through fifth innings to keep within striking distance.

Juan Gamez went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI to lead the Bobcats.

The Pioneers will play No. 8 Hamilton on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Camelback Ranch Stadium in Glendale as the double elimination portion of the tournament begins.

No. 7 Desert Mountain needed extra innings in its game against No. 10 Goodyear Millennium, but defeated the Tigers, 9-8, in eight innings. With the victory, the Wolves will hit the road to play No. 2 Chaparral at 4 p.m. at Camelback Ranch.

No. 8 Hamilton used great pitching by Parker Gallegos coupled with great defense in the field to defeat visiting No. 24 Corona del Sol, 9-1. Gallegos pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and one earned run as the Huskies turned four double plays in the game. Hamilton’s Garret Enwiller went 2-for-3 including a 3-run home run in the bottom of the first that got the Huskies (22-7) going early. Hamilton will move on to play No. 1 seeded Pinnacle at Camelback Ranch in Glendale on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Division II

No. 6-seeded Saguaro scored 12 runs on 12 hits as the Sabercats blasted visiting No. 11 Bradshaw Mountain, 12-2, in five innings in the second round of the Division II tournament. Starting pitcher Alan Madsen allowed only five hits and two earned runs to pace the Sabercats (24-7). Austin Anderson finished the night 3-for-4 from the plate for Saguaro, which takes on No. 3 Tucson Sabino Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Tempe Diablo Stadium to begin the double elimination portion of the Div. II tournament.

No. 2 Notre Dame cruised past No. 15 Arcadia, 12-2, in six innings. Kelvin Pilot pitched a complete game for the Saints, recording 5 strikeouts while giving up only two earned runs on just four hits. Notre Dame (20-12) had 18 hits, led by Dan Zieman who was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate. The Saints move on to take on No. 10 Tucson Salpointe at 4 p.m. at Tempe Diablo Stadium on Thursday.

Division IV

No. 13 Scottsdale Prep took care of business by knocking off No. 20 Joseph City, 12-7, to advance to the second round of the Division IV state tournament. Scottsdale Prep will face No. 4 Yuma on Friday at Tempe Diablo Quad Complex.
