Prep highlights: Tempe upsets No. 2 Seton

Tempe held on to upset No. 2 Chandler Seton Catholic 69-66 on the Sentinels' home floor in a 4A-II East Sky Region game Wednesday.

Marcell McClain and Jordan Baker combined to score 48 of the Buffaloes' points. McClain finished with a game-high 25 points and Baker added 23 to go along with seven assists and two steals.

McClain also came up big by hitting one of his three 3-pointers late in the game to help Tempe (4-4, 1-1) pull away. McClain also went 6 of 8 from the free throw line.

Tempe’s big man Gus Beltran flirted with a triple-double by finishing with seven points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Thomas Harty and Dale Lockhart each scored 14 points for Seton, which fell to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in region play.

BOYS SOCCER

Gilbert defeated Red Mountain 2-0 in the Tempe Diablos Soccer Classic at Tempe Sports Complex. Tigers goalkeeper J.J. Meier recorded both the shutout and a goal.

Meier came up the field in the first half to score on a corner kick to give Gilbert a early 1-0 lead.

Emanuel Castillo scored the second goal for the Tigers in the second half.

GIRLS SOCCER

Nicole Krueger scored three goals to lead Horizon to a 5-3 victory over Westview in the Horizon Huskies Tournament of Champions at Rose Mofford Sports Complex.

Annie Newell and Ashley Stein each added a goal to send the Huskies (3-0) to the Gold Bracket semifinals.

In other Gold Bracket games played Wednesday at the Tournament of Champions, Chaparral defeated Prescott 2-1 on penalty kicks, Catalina Foothills beat Xavier 2-1 and Flowing Wells shut out Mountain Ridge 1-0.

Horizon will face Chaparral and Catalina Foothills will play Flowing Wells in the semifinals today at Rose Mofford. ...

Highland received two big performances from Ashley Hatch and Jaden Degracie on its way to shutting out Mesa Red Mountain 7-0 in the Tempe Diablos Soccer Classic at Tempe Sports Complex.

Desert Mountain edged Basha 2-1 in the Tempe Diablos Soccer Classic. Janelle Brandom and Jordyn Greenberg each had a goal for the Wolves (3-1).

Melissa Beck scored the lone goal for the Bears (1-2-1).
