One year removed from the state boys soccer quarterfinals, Hamilton is hovering around the .500 mark, but Fiesta Region player of the year Jason Cascio hasn’t missed a beat.
Cascio scored 21 goals last season and has 18 already this year with a handful of games left. Not bad for a midfielder who has to play back as well as attack. Huskies coach Les Renner calls Cascio "one of the most productive players I have had the pleasure to coach." Even if Hamilton misses the playoffs this year, Renner may be able to build around sophomore Luis Morfin, who has added 10 goals and five assists for the Huskies this year.
Power points are not being used in boys soccer to determine postseason berths, but if they were, there wouldn’t be a lot of surprises. Tucson High, at 17-2-1, gets the top spot with a pair of wins over perennial southern Arizona power Tucson Salpointe and victories over Marana Mountain View and Tucson Sahuaro.
Central Region leader Mountain Pointe is second, followed by Fiesta favorite Gilbert, Sierra Vista Buena (9-4) and Tucson Canyon del Oro (10-6-1).
Corona del Sol is eighth and Dobson is 11th. Defending state champion Horizon is 30th.
