Desert Vista scored two runs in the first inning and that’s all it needed as the Thunder shutout visiting Corona del Sol 2-0 in a Division I non-sectional game Tuesday.
Danielle Block threw a complete game and struck out 14 batters to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Mckenna Isenberg struck out 13 batters in the loss for the Aztecs.
SOFTBALL
Red Mountain 4, Mountain View 1: After giving up the lead in the top of the first, Red Mountain pitcher Bre Macha hit a home run to tie the game in the bottom of the first. A two-run single by TJ Beeson gave the Lions the lead for good. Macha earned her fifth win of the year, giving up one hit, one walk, and recording 10 strikeouts.
Chandler 5, Boulder Creek 4: Chandler held off visiting Boulder Creek to come away with a 5-4 win. Sydney Behrens hit a two-run home run to help lead the Wolves. Behrens went 2-for-3 on the day. Kalli Ohton pitched a complete game to improve to 4-2 on the year.
Xavier 3, Sandra Day O'Connor 1: The Gators used a three-run fifth inning to get a road win. Karlee Johnson threw a complete game, giving up just two hits and striking out five batters. Megan Donahey had three hits for the Gators and Katie Park collected two RBIs.
Chaparral 5, Horizon 3: Natalie Cravens hit a three-run triple in the sixth inning to help Chaparral to a win over visiting Horizon. Dallas McBride struck out six on her way to earning the win for the Firebirds (7-3). Margaret Stahm and Katie Gore each hit solo home runs for the Huskies (7-2). In other softball action Dobson beat Highland 7-3 and Red Mountain defeated Mountain View 4-1.
BASEBALL
Desert Vista 3, Corona del Sol 1: Desert Vista used a two-run sixth inning to edge host Corona del Sol. Austin Hicks hit a home run and knocked in two runs for the Thunder (3-3). Tyler Viza pitched a complete game to earn his first win of the season. Nathan Chokey went 2-for-2 and had one RBI for the Aztecs (4-2). In other baseball action, Millennium defeated Desert Ridge 7-5.
Williams Field 7, Poston Butte 6: The Black Hawks jumped out to an early 4 run lead but the Broncos battled back. Travis Rowe entered the game in the bottom of the third and tossed 4 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowed one hit, no walks and seven strikeouts and earned the win for Williams Field. Chris Kobar was the only player to post more than one RBI, and some patient hitting by Jeddediah Fagg was instrumental. The Black Hawks are 7-2 overall with a 4-0 power rankings record to start the season.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Highland 3, Williams Field 0: Highland improved to 2-0 to start its season after defeating host Williams Field in straight sets: 28-26, 25-17, 25-23. Ryan Morrison led Highland with 12 kills. Shawn Chapman finished with 10 kills and Jarred Greene had 11. Collin Ward had 36 assists for the Hawks. Desert Vista defeated Corona del Sol on the road in three sets; 26-24, 25-19, 25-17. Blake Pendleton had 5 kills for the Aztecs (0-2).
Westwood 3, Barry Goldwater 1: The Warriors defeated host Goldwater on the road in four sets; 25-13, 25-11, 22-25, 25-20. Alex Arzaga had 20 assists and four aces for the Warriors (2-0). In other boys volleyball action Gilbert defeated Red Mountain in straight sets.
GIRLS TENNIS
In girls tennis meets Hamilton swept Perry, 9-0, Red Mountain defeated Desert Ridge, 9-0, and Fountain Hills beat Scottsdale Christian 9-0.

I'm not sure who reported this but the stats are wrong. Each team scored 1 in the 1st inning and DV scored two more in the 4th or 5th inning to win it 3-1. Looks like the stats below have it right but the story is wrong. Great reporting guys!
