Neil Kerkhof had 12 strikeouts and went the distance Friday as Seton, the No. 4 seed from the South, pounded Show Low, the No. 1 seed from the East, 14-2 in a first-round 3A state baseball playoff game at Maryvale Sports Complex.
Kerkhof was also 3-for-4 with an RBI. Teammate Sean Reilly was 4-for-5, with three runs, two triples, and five RBIs, and Ted Pattock was 2-for-2 with two runs, a triple, and three RBIs.
The Sentinels will take on Higley in a second-round game at 9 a.m. today.
HIGLEY 7, WINDOW ROCK 1: Pat Delacerda struck out 10 in five innings as the host Knights topped the Fighting Scouts in a first-round 3A state game at Maryvale.
Delacerda improved to 9-1 while Jason Rayls was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs for Higley.
FOUNTAIN HILLS 14, MONUMENT VALLEY 1: Robert Romanick and Austin Jones were each 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs as the Falcons (25-2) routed the Mustangs a first-round 3A state game at Maryvale.
Starting pitcher Matt Woehrle struck out seven in three innings to improve to 9-0. Fountain Hills, which will play Payson at 9 a.m. today, drew 10 walks. The game was shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.
SCOTTSDALE CHRISTIAN 11, ST. JOHNS 1: Will Munsil led the way on the mound and at the plate in the Eagles' first-round victory in the 2A state tournament at Maryvale.
The sophomore pitched a complete game and held the Redskins to five hits and was 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs.
Nick Skaff went 3-for-4 with a triple, and Jeremiah Winship drove in two runs for Scottsdale Christian (19-6).

SCOTTSDALE CHRISTIAN 11, MAYER 1: Mandy Hickman hit a home run, scored three runs and fell a triple short of a cycle as the Eagles (18-5-2) were victorious in the first 2A state tournament appearance in school history. Debbie Shisler fanned eight batters and allowed three hits in the five-inning contest and Laura Yarbrough went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Scottsdale Christian faces Benson in the second round at 10 a.m. today at Desert West Sports Complex in Phoenix.
SETON 5, LAKESIDE BLUE RIDGE 0: Syndey Sheedy tossed a one-hit gem, striking out 13 batters and allowing one walk in the Sentinels' first-round win over the Yellow Jackets at Rose Mofford Sports Complex. Catcher Shelby Davis led Seton at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Sarah Hershkowitz doubled in Seton's other two runs and Brittany Martin went 2-for-4. The Sentinels face Fountain Hills today at 10 a.m.
HIGLEY 10, WINDOW ROCK 0: Izzy Pines' first-inning two-run homer got the Knights going and pitcher Adriana Naranjo (15-5) tossed a one-hitter to advance Higley into the 3A state quarterfinals.
The Knights (20-6) play Safford at 10 a.m. today at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.
FOUNTAIN HILLS 14, HOLBROOK 3: The Falcons pummelled the Roadrunners in 3A state tournament action at Rose Mofford Sports Complex. With the win, Fountain Hills advances to the second round and will play Seton today.
