Softball state tournament roundup: Mountain View stays hot to start postseason

Kelly Wickerman's two-run home run helped lead No. 4 Mountain View to a 4-0 win over visiting No. 13 Skyline in the first round of the 5A Division I softball state tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Toros received a great outing on the mound by pitcher Val Kaff, who allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings.

Mountain View (22-10) moves on to host Mountain Ridge, Tuesday, at 4 p.m. The Coyotes will visit No. 12 Chandler in an elimination game, Tuesday, at 4 p.m.

No. 3 Basha shut out No. 14 Sierra Vista Buena, 3-0. The Bears advances on to host No. 6 Hamilton, Tuesday, at 4 p.m. The Colts face elimination, Tuesday, when they visit No. 11 Dobson at 4 p.m.

No. 5 Mountain Ridge knocked off No. 12 Chandler, 6-2. The Mountain Lions will travel to No. 4 Mesa Mountain View on Tuesday to play their second round game starting at 4 p.m. The Wolves will host No. 13 Skyline at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Bri Gonzales went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and 4 RBIs, while pitcher Breanna Macha allowed just one run on one hit as host No. 1 Red Mountain defeated No. 16 Kofa 12-1. The Mountain Lions (25-7) will host No. 9 Casa Grande at 4 p.m., Tuesday. The Kings will play at No. 8 Alhambra, Tuesday, at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.

No. 9 Casa Grande dismantled No. 8 Alhambra 16-1. The Cougars advance to play at No. 1 Red Mountain, Tuesday, at 4 p.m. The Lions will host No. 16 Kofa at 4 p.m., Tuesday, in an elimination game.

No. 10 Tucson Salpointe pulled off an upset by beating No. 7 Xavier, 4-0. The Lancers will visit No. 2 Gilbert, Tuesday, for a 4 p.m. game. The Gators will host No. 15 Mesquite in a 4 p.m. elimination game, Tuesday.


No. 8 Perry scored four runs in the first three innings and held on for a 4-3 victory over visiting No. 9 Peora Centennial.

The Pumas jumped out to a 4-0 lead early, only to see the Coyotes make a valiant comeback in the top of the 6th, scoring three runs but failing to score another in the seventh. Mandy Grebe led Perry (24-8) from the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

The Pumas move on to play No. 1 Horizon, at Horizon, on Tuesday starting at 4 p.m.

Centennial will host No. 16 Yuma, Tuesday, at 4 p.m.

Elsewhere in 5A-II action, No. 11 Tucson Sunnyside upset No. 6 Desert Mountain, 7-1 in the first round of the 5A-II State Softball Tournament. The Blue Devils will advance to play at No. 3 ironwood Ridge, Tuesday, at 4 p.m. The Wolves (24-8) face elimination,  when they host No. 14 Marana Mountain View at 4 p.m.

No. 10 Chaparral upset No. 7 Phoenix Sandra Day O'Connor, 6-0. The Firebirds will visit No. 2 Cibola, Tuesday, at 4 p.m. The Eagles will host No. 15 Phoenix Carl Hayden in an elimination game at 4 p.m.

No. 1 Horizon defeated No. 16 Yuma 14-3. The Huskies will host No. 8 Perry on Tuesday, at 4 p.m.
