State roundup: Purtzer leads Eagles to victory

Heidi Purtzer tossed a fourhit shutout and had three RBIs to lead Scottsdale Christian over San Manuel 8-0 Friday in the second round of the 2A state softball tournament at Rose Mofford Complex.

The Eagles (23-7) will take on Tombstone, an 8-2 winner over Williams, at 10 a.m. today in the quarterfinals at Rose Mofford.


In other 2A second-round games, Northwest Christian shut out Morenci 3-0 and next will play St. Johns, a 10-7 winner over Maricopa. Benson defeated Bourgade Catholic 3-2 and advanced to play Pusch Ridge, which beat Camp Verde 13-5. Phoenix Christian knocked off Yuma Catholic 10-3 to set up a date with Willcox, which narrowly defeated Hayden 4-3. ...

In the first round of the 3A tournament, Seton Catholic beat Chino Valley 8-1. The Sentinels play Snowflake, a 10-0 winner over Window Rock, today.

Wickenburg defeated Sahuarita 4-3; Payson downed Tuba City 10-4; Holbrook beat Winslow 10-6; Estrella Foothills was an 11-2 winner over Coolidge; Florence beat River Valley 6-3; and Show Low was a 4-1 winner over Greyhills. ...

In the 1A tournament first round, St. Augustine dominated Bowie-San Simon 13-1; Bagdad defeated Ashfork 19-1; Superior beat St. David 12-2; Mogollon outslugged Mayer 10-9; Valley Lutheran defeated Fredonia by forfeit; Valley Union was a 15-2 winner over Ft. Thomas; Joseph City shut out Orme 16-0; and Green Fields was a 9-3 winner over Pima.


Gregory Paddock had 11 strikeouts to help Coolidge (20-8) defeat Chino Valley 6-2 in the first round of the 3A tournament at Maryvale Baseball Park. In other 3A games, Fountain Hills edged Sahuarita 8-7; Show Low topped Greyhills 10-3; Holbrook dominated Window Rock 12-0; Globe crushed Etrella Foothills 17-1; Winslow got by Payson 9-6; and Wickenburg knocked out Safford 12-6. ...

In the 2A tournament second round, Koby Temple went 2-for-2 to lead Valley Christian (28-3) to a 5-3 victory over Willcox at Maryvale Baseball Park. Meanwhile, Camp Verde was a 7-1 winner over Maricopa (14-13); Bisbee outlasted Phoenix Christian 5-4 in eight innings; Hayden disposed of Williams 14-1; Northwest Catholic upset Yuma Catholic 5-3; Benson was an 8-1 winner over San Manuel; St. Johns ousted Tombstone 9-5; and Pusch Ridge beat Bourgade Catholic 3-2. ...

In the opening round of the 1A tournament, Valley Union blasted Clifton 12-2; Bagdad slipped by Ashfork 5-4; Duncan beat St. David 13-3; Fredonia thumped Valley Lutheran 13-5; Mayer edged Joseph City 5-4; Pima eliminated Tanque Verde 8-2; Mogollon beat St. Paul’s 5-4; and Superior ripped Ajo 12-2.


In 1A and 2A individual and doubles championships at the Tucson Racquet Club, Phoenix Country Day School’s Cole Goodyear and Steven Corey defeated Thatcher’s doubles team of Dennis Kempton and Nick Barney 6-3, 6-3.

On the girls side, defending champion Kendra Simon of Phoenix Country Day advanced, as did teammate Arianna Rose.
