Phoenix Northwest Christian, behind Ashley Andrade's 14 kills and four blocks, defeated Chandler Valley Christian 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 on the Trojans' home floor Tuesday in a rematch of a 2007 2A girls volleyball state semifinal.
Northwest Christian (6-1) also got help from Katie Peterson, who had five kills, and Courtney L'ecuyer, who had 27 assists.
Despite the defending state champions handing the Trojans their first loss of the season, Valley Christian coach Molly Stark said the matchup was an important test for her young squad.
"Actually, we did pretty well," Stark said. "It's a good first-half matchup for us. They have a lot of experience, we don't have as much experience. We will learn from it, and we still have not reached the first half of the season yet."
Valley Christian (6-1), which only has one senior, was led by Chanel Brown, who had seven kills and a block, and Stacy Jones and Kristen Johannsen, who had five kills apiece.
Stark said she was impressed with the fan support and the effort of her young team.
"We had a ton of fans, which is little different for us, because we usually do not have as many people here, so the fan support was phenomenal," Stark said. "Even though we got down, we didn't give up, we still picked away at their lead and picked away at their lead.
"We still need to work on passing and serving and have a little confidence in ourselves."
Northwest Christian coach Jamie Bair was pleased with the win.
"It was good to get a win against a team like Valley Christian," Bair said. "We've had our struggles, but we're mentally tough and we've come back from a lot of hard things, so we're thrilled with our progress so far."
Valley Christian plays Phoenix Horizon Honors, a team that defeated Northwest Christian earlier this month, on Thursday.
