Chandler at Centennial
Chandler is arguably the best team in Division I and is loaded with a fast-paced offense led by quarterback Bryce Perkins and running back Chase Lucas. Centennial, a Division II powerhouse, is led by star running back/linebacker Dedrick Young. Centennial will be looking for revenge after last year’s 41-21 thumping at the hands of the Wolves.
Pinnacle at Red Mountain
Pinnacle’s Brian Lewerke, who is committed to play at Michigan State, is one of the best quarterbacks in Arizona. Red Mountain’s traditionally strong defense will be tested early by Lewerke and Co.
Highland at Queen Creek
Highland gets a stiff test for its season opener. Queen Creek might be a Division III school, but it is unafraid to play the big boys like Highland, a playoff team a year ago in Division I. Queen Creek running back Weston Barlow ran for over 100 yards and four touchdowns last week against Poston Butte. Be on the lookout for him to do the same against the Hawks, who counter with senior running back Josh Chadwick, who could be one of the breakout players of 2014.
Basha at Desert Vista
Desert Vista looks to rebound from a disappointing 4-6 season and the first step in doing that will come against Basha. The Bears went 6-6 last year and are also looking to rebound under new head coach Gerald Todd in this battle of East Valley teams.
