Buffaloes survive Panthers’ late surge

Despite being outscored 24-13 in the fourth quarter, Tempe High held on to defeat visiting Flagstaff Coconino 63-59 in a 4A-II nonregion boys basketball game Wednesday night.

Brandon Haywood helped preserve the win with a key block with 15 seconds remaining. Haywood finished with three blocks and also scored 12 points for the Buffaloes (8-4). Marcell McClain also had a big defensive night, finishing with four steals and adding 13 points against the Panthers.

Erik Battle led the offensive charge for Tempe, scoring a game-high 23 points. Battle scored 15 of his 23 in the first half, when he made five 3-pointers.


Adam Schumacher scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the third quarter as Coronado pulled away for a 64-55 win at Arcadia in a 4A-II East Sky Region game. Luis Flores scored 15 points and Tony Ochoa added 11 for Coronado (7-5, 3-0 East Sky). ...

Hamilton defeated visiting Carl Hayden 61-49 in a 5A-I nonregion game. Ryan Evans led the Huskies (5-1) with 21 points and nine rebounds. ...

Brendon Lavender had 27 points as Mountain View beat host Galena High (Reno, Nev.) 65-55 in a exhibition game in the George Maldonado Classic in Reno. Jordan McClelland added 12 points and Eric Hunt finished with 11 for the Toros, who will play for keeps in the first round of the tournament at 4:30 p.m. today versus El Dorado High School (Nev.).

Cassidy Osborn and Kaitlin King each scored a goal as host Xavier beat Desert Vista 2-0 in a 5A-I nonregion game. Sam Bidwell assisted on both goals for the Gators (6-0).


Host Corona del Sol beat Xavier 61-55 in a 5A-I nonregion game. Kim Petalozzi led the Aztecs (3-8) with 20 points, and Alex Leake added 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Rikki Mulloy led the Gators with 17 points.


Chandler’s 285-pounder Michael Ramos pinned Highland’s Chip Serafin in 2 minutes, 32 seconds, to lift the Wolves to a 40-39 victory over the Hawks at Basha High School. Chandler trailed by six points heading into the final match of the dual and Ramos made up that margin with his pin. Chandler won the tiebreaker by virtue of its six pins.
