TUCSON — The first five offensive plays of Williams Field's game at Amphitheater resulted in first downs on each snap, not to mention a quick touchdown for the visiting Black Hawks and two strong runs for Amphi.

That start seemed like the appetizer for a night full of explosive offense.

Only Williams Field followed through on the early productivity, though, resulting in an almost effortless 56-6 crushing of the Panthers on the night Amphi honored state all-time wins leader Vern Friedli.

“We had a mismatch tonight,” said Williams Field coach Steve Campbell, whose team moved to 5-0. “We had a lot of goals for tonight, and we accomplished them.”

The Black Hawks scored on their first six first-half possessions, enacting the running clock with 7:55 remaining in the second quarter. By that time Williams Field had 293 yards on 22 plays, while Amphitheater finished the first half with just nine yards of offense after gaining 25 yards on its first two snaps.

Tailbacks Sean Schweichler (94 yards on seven carries, one TD) and Ray Velasquez (85 yards on three carries, one TD), receiver Cole Forsgren (four catches for 65 yards and three TDs) and quarterback Jeddediah Fagg (98 yards on 6-of-7 passing with three TDs) were all comfortably resting on the sideline long before halftime, with Fagg helping to hold up play cards for the second- and third-team Black Hawks that still managed to outgain Amphi 183-11 after the running clock began.

“It's fun to watch our backups do what we get to do,” said Forsgren, who scored on a 11-yard pass from Fagg for a 21-0 lead midway through the first quarter, then hauled in TD catches of 8 and 24 yards in the second quarter.

“They deserved it,” said Schweichert, who has 10 rushing scores this season, of Williams Field's reserves. “Everyone was just fired up to do what we needed to do.”

Amphi (1-4), which for more than three decades under Friedli was a wishbone offense, struggled trying to use a spread offense on Friday. Quarterback Thomas Bolen was 8 of 15 for 61 yards, 51 of which came in the game's final 15 minutes when the game was completely out of hand.

Most of the time, though, Bolen and his backfield were running for their lives against a Williams Field front seven that destroyed Amphi's offensive line.

“We've been pretty good up front all year long,” Campbell said.

It was the third win in four meetings for Williams Field over Amphi but the first against the Panthers under head coach Brandon Willard, who took over the program this season following Friedli's retirement. Friedli won 291 games in 36 seasons at Amphi and retired with 331 victories in his coaching career, most in state history.
