It took Mountain View until the second quarter to find a spark in their offense, but once it did, Skyline couldn't answer.
The Toros (1-2) took down the Coyotes (2-1), 42-0, on Friday as Mountain View earned its first win of the season.
Skyline looked to take charge on its first drive of the game, as the Coyotes (2-1) made their way in to Toros' territory. Four penalties, however, stalled their drive and pushed them out of field-goal range.
The Coyotes went for it on fourth-and-long but couldn’t convert. That drive was the closest they came to the end zone.
Skyline’s defense held stride with the Toros until two minutes were left in the first half. The Toros struck first in with the wildcat formation, as Chase Funk scrambled and completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Seth Stapley.
Funk, who's rotating quarterback duties, was all over the field in the victory. He threw one pass, had three runs, four catches and was the Toros punter most of the night.
While Mountain easily rolled to their first victory of the season, coach Chad DeGrenier wasn’t fully satisfied with the team’s production.
“We have to fix what we’re doing in the first half,” DeGrenier said. “This is three weeks in a row where we’ve started slow and we need to get better at that.”
The Toros picked up their offense in the second half, with touchdowns on their first three drives. Two of those were big yardage plays, with a 40 yard pass from quarterback John Clark to Clark Brown and a 40 yard run by Brown for touchdowns.
Clark had 176 yards passing and two touchdowns on 13 completions. The offense stayed balanced because Weston Birtcher led the Toros in rushing with 164 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.
Brown also returned a 55-yard punt for a touchdown in the third quarter, adding an extra spark to the offense. He finished the night with five catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns to go along with the return.
Skyline was forced to throw the ball most of the night, as they were trailing, but couldn’t get the ball moving. Michael Amado was just 4-for-22 passing for 32 yards. Their run game was led by Francisco Avitia, who had 66 yards on 16 carries. The Coyotes finished with only 139 yards on offense.
Mountain View hopes to build on their first win as they head to Mountain Ridge (1-2) next week. Skyline faces Dobson next Friday night.
“We’ve been so close to clicking every week, we play a good first half here, and a good second half there,” DeGrenier said. “Even (Friday) everything came in the second half except the last three minutes of the second quarter.”

Yes mountain view should enjoy their big win over a playoff contender like Skyline.......Heck, gee i bet they may even beat westwood!! They are so great i bet Red mnt only beats them by 40 points this year instead of 50 like last year

Really....??? Sorry I didn't get the number of the train that ran mountain view into the dirt last year correct ( only 41 points ? ). They had them right where they wanted them. LOL. Dont look too far ahead several more great games like Red Mountain, Pinnacle and Mountain Point. Sure bet for the same results but then again 38,39,40,41 theres loosing and being punked
