Mesa and Mountain View, the teams that squared off earlier this week for the 5A Division I team title, qualified eight wrestlers apiece Saturday for next week’s semifinals of the 5A-I individual tournament.
Saturday’s opening-round matches of the tournament were held at Avondale’s La Joya High School.
Mesa’s contingent was led by unbeaten senior 112-pounder Anthony Robles, a state champion, who recorded two pins in reaching the semis. Robles is 46-0 for the season. Other teammates advancing were Joe Taylor (103), Caesar Meraz (135), Alex Pacheco (140), Jacob Langkilde (145), Joe Ray Berumen (152), Gabriel Lopez (171) and Andy Jay (189).
Mountain View’s semifinalists were paced by oncebeaten Spencer Jackson, who pinned two foes to advance. Other Toros advancing to the semis were Tony Covert (112), Jadon Johnson (125), Justin Castillo (145), Preston Pico (152), Conner Stockton (171), Joe Farnsworth Jr. (189) and Dan Huber (215).
The school with the thirdmost semifinal qualifiers was Highland (6). The Hawks were led by unbeaten Ryan Becerra (160), who recorded two firstperiod pins. Also advancing to the semis were Blake Edwards (103), Nick Mills, (112), Kevin Duran (125), Spencer Jasper (130) and Russell Johnson (135).
Red Mountain and Desert Vista each placed five in the semis. Red Mountain’s qualifiers were Matt Moorehouse (112), Greg Carbajal (119), Jake Kauffman (140), Ali Escariega (152) and Aaron Hoberg (215). Desert Vista advanced Wes Osborn (125), Joey Donofrio (130), Matt Franklin (135), Preston Pruett (152) and Jack Porter (160).
Corona del Sol waited until the last four weight classes were up to qualify four for the semis — unbeaten Cory Hale (171), Luke Macchiaroli (189), unbeaten Robert Holbrook (215) and Trevor Stapp (275). The tournament continues Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Glendale Arena.
5A DIVISION II
Marcos de Niza advanced four wrestlers and Desert Ridge two for the semifinals of the 5A-II individual state tournament in competition Saturday at Raymond Kellis High School in Glendale.
Marcos de Niza’s semi qualifiers are 103-pounder Josiah Stotts, Patrick Carey (171), Roy Rojas (189) and Richard Hernandez (heavyweight). Desert Ridge’s qualifiers came from the middle weights — Josh McDaniels (135) and Gabe McDaniels (140). Tucson Sunnyside, which won the 5A-II team tournament on Wednesday, advanced 10 to the semifinals.
