Basha entered 5A Central play last week as the odds-on favorite in the region, after a 4-1 start that included wins over Tucson Sunnyside and Gilbert. But the region is wide open now after the Bears were upended by a resurgent Mountain Pointe team.
The Bears have a chance this week to iron out the kinks against Laveen Cesar Chavez before returning to region play next week against Marcos de Niza.
But that doesn’t mean the Bears are guaranteed to have an easy time with the Champions this week.
Mountain Pointe ran all day against the Bears, collecting more than 250 yards on the ground, and Chavez will try to do the same. The Champions endorse a run-now, pass-later mentality to the tune of 340 yards per game on the ground, and just 75 through the air. The Champions’ top four ball carriers are averaging a collective 8 yards per carry.
