Thursday roundup: Peterson’s grand slam lifts Hamilton

Kyle Peterson hit a game-winning grand slam to give Chandler Hamilton a 15-11 victory Wednesday over visiting Phoenix Mountain Pointe in a 5A nonregion baseball game.

Before Peterson won the game, Marco Mosqueira and Tyler Wojtal scored on an errant throw to tie the game. The Pride then intentionally walked the next two batters in front of Peterson.

Anthony Marko (1-1), who came on in relief of Sammy Vandenheuvel, got the win.


Steven Lazorchak pitched six strong innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out five to lead Highland (10-12) to a 13-1 road victory over St. Mary’s. The Hawks’ Cooper Baker went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Nick Baker went 2-for-4 with an RBI.


Nathan Horgash won the long jump and the triple jump as Dobson defeated Skyline at home 121-18. … Mark Jackson won the 100- and 200-meter races to lead Corona del Sol over host Basha 86-52. Charles Schweitzer won two events for the Bears. … Ron Taylor won the 100, 200 and long jump and led the 1,600 relay to a victory as Mountain View defeated Red Mountain at home. Sam Rogers came in first in the shot put with a distance of 47 feet, 9 inches and won the discus throw as well.


Jamie Michaud of Mountain View broke her own school record of 11-7 in the pole vault by clearing 12-0 1/2 and Heidi Brown won three events (300 hurdles, long jump, triple jump) as the Toros defeated Red Mountain 102-39 at home. … Shawn-tae Greene won three events to lead host Dobson to a win over Skyline 117-24. Courtney Hayes and Kody Lippincott each won two events for the Mustangs. … Tiffany Summers won the high jump and the triple jump to lead Corona del Sol to a 104-37 road win over Basha. Samia Stokes added victories in the shot put and the discus for the Aztecs.


Riccio Torrez homered and drove in four runs as Brophy defeated Red Mountain 8-3 at home. R.J. Preach struck out eight to notch his fifth win and Josh Garcia added a homer for the Broncos (21-2). Dean Espy paced the Mountain Lions (10-13) with a pair of hits and a double. … Jose Bracamonte homered and had two RBIs to lead Chandler to a 4-3 home victory over Laveen Cesar Chavez (13-11). Michael Morales picked up his second win of the season, pitching six innings and striking out eight for the Wolves (18-4). … Rocky High went 4-for-4 and Jeff Hibner and Austin Carr both homered as Mesquite outslugged host Desert Vista, 12-9. Cole Pembroke led the Thunder with three hits and a home run.


Chandler’s Andrea Salizar struck out five batters while shutting out Phoenix Shadow Mountain 1-0 at home. Tyler Weldon had the lone RBI for the Wolves (12-12). … Sienna Martinez of Mountain Pointe went 3-for-5 with a double, including the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded to score Tiana Chavez from third as the host Pride (15-10) defeated Hamilton 4-3. … Lenna Madden’s single with two outs in the seventh broke up a tie game to give Scottsdale Christian a 6-5 home win over Phoenix Christian. Alex Purtzer homered and drove in three runs for the Eagles.


Ryan Mahoney shot a match-low 40 to lead Seton Catholic (170) over Valley Christian (174), Phoenix Country Day (176) and Phoenix Christian (190) at Phantom Horse Golf Club in Phoenix. Zach Hyer and Nathan Dunn both shot a 41 to tie for second for the Trojans.


Jim Mikan had 14 assists and three aces as Mesquite defeated visiting Tempe High 25-12, 25-16, 25-15. Josh Knighton added four kills and three blocks for the Wildcats (17-6).
