Five players scored in double figures as No. 1-ranked Phoenix Desert Vista cruised to a 78-63 win at Mesa Red Mountain Tuesday night in a 5A-I nonregion boys basketball game.

The Thunder (4-0) outscored the Mountain Lions (3-3) 19-9 in the second quarter. Desert Vista didn’t allow a Red Mountain field goal in the first six minutes of the period as the Thunder turned a 23-18 first-quarter lead into a 42-27 advantage at halftime.

“This is a pretty good defensive team when they apply themselves and put the effort in, so they’re capable of quarters like that,” Desert Vista coach Doug Harris said. “We were a little sluggish early, but overall, I thought it was a good performance.”

Senior center Mike Proctor led the Thunder with 15 points and junior guard Josh Lowery added 13, but it was senior forward Will Bond who sparked Desert Vista’s offense by scoring 9 of his 12 points in the first half.

“Will was huge tonight,” Harris said. “He’s not quite in basketball shape yet, but he did a phenomenal job for us tonight.”

The Thunder outscored Red Mountain 11-3 to open the second half and led by 21 heading into the fourth quarter. A 3-point play by Bond gave Desert Vista its biggest lead of the night at 62-38 less than a minute into the fourth. The Thunder made 25 of 32 free throws.

“I think we’ve passed pretty much every early task,” said Harris, whose top-seeded Thunder lost 72-69 to Phoenix St. Mary’s in the 5A-I state semifinals last season. “We’re playing with some effort, we’re playing with some energy and we’re playing together.”

Junior guard Marcus Lever scored 11 points and senior forward Barret Robbins added 10 for Desert Vista.

Mountain Lions guard Keawe Enos led all scorers with 27 points, including 18 in the second half. Senior forward Deonte Roberts scored 13.
