Dobson HS in Mesa has also won the 'We The People' constitutional debates many times in the last 15 years. Your list is very incomplete.Jan 5, 2012
Social Security was not just raided by Republicans as some would have you believe. You should check it out, Cerulean.
The first President to raid the social Security Trust Fund was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Every president since then has done the same thing.
Blaming Regan or Bush, or even blaming Johnson or Obama is just being deliberately blind.
If Social Security had been run responsibly, in the way that Pension Funds are supposed to be run, there would be an asset portfolio that would pay for all of the benefits. But, Congress has seen fit to spend every dime on things to win elections. As a result, there is nothing in the Trust Fund but IOU's from the treasury.
And may God help you if you have to live on only Social Security. It would be a miracle if you could.
Even now, there is more taken in for Social Security than is paid out. But that will soon change. Then, Look out!
With no money, and no one wanting to pay very high taxes, there will be nothing left. That is the reality that the Republicans are trying to point out. The Democrats are trying to deny the problem. Both sides are trying to blame each other.
I wish I had a real solution, but any solution will be painful. The present policy of pointing fingers while doing nothing is probably the one that will result in the most pain.Jul 21, 2011
At last, a solution to the perennial parking shortage at ASU.
It's just too bad you will have to walk all the way across campus. Oh well, you'd have to do that anyway if you drive.Dec 27, 2010
For those with short memories, the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy was enacted to protect the homosexual military personnel.
There were incidents as the letter above points out. there were also cases of sailors disappearing from ships in the middle of the ocean.
This also opens up the specter of mass complaints of sexual harassment both of and by homosexuals in the military. It will happen.
We should always remember the first rule of politics. "Everything gets abused. Often in ways the rulers never though of."
Look for ways that this can go out of control. The mind just boggles.Dec 26, 2010
I have lived in several states, and Arizona spends less and provides less resources for schools than any other state I have seen. Some sources say we are currently 50th in the US by a comfortable margin.
My wife teaches school, and Mesa doesn't even provide paper for handouts in class.
I remember the flack several years ago when it was shown that many school buildings in Arizona were condemned as unsafe. Some have tried to hold class in August without adequate AC.
I can see the reasons for not wanting to gold plate the schools, but face reality. We spend less on education per student than ANY other state. We pay teachers less. We don't provide supplies. No wonder we have the highest dropout rate around.
But, we have a testing system that the State Administrators can't pass. Big whoop! I'm sure that fixes everything. If it doesn't work out, then look for someone to blame. Having a scapegoat will fix it. Blame the Teachers, blame the Administration, Blame the President, or the Governor, or the last President or Governor. But don't change anything.
It's a sure recipe for failure.
This is just an idea, but, what if instead of trying to find a scapegoat, our Legislature, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and our School Administrations provided resources for the Teachers in the Classrooms. After all, it's in the Classrooms where the education happens. We can have all the bureaucracy in the world (some think we do) and it won't accomplish anything if we don't provide teachers and the resources they need to teach. Providing resources and encouragement to parents helps too.
We've tested the kids to death, and the results came in. They spend too much time taking useless tests, and not enough time learning.
Will anything change?Nov 15, 2010
Isn't any home in the valley that is more than 75 years old one that would qualify for a place on the National Historic Register?
Also, homestead act should apply here.
Finally, tax records. If the family has been paying taxes on the land, they own the land. If they haven't been paying taxes, then it is a tax default. Their Lawyer should know.Nov 15, 2010
Good news. Now, if the return on investment (ROI) is acceptable, then it will take off.
Solar has in the past had a poor ROI. But, costs are dropping, and infrastructure is adapting to help. I hope we see more of this. Building codes, and utility rates now take solar power into account. There are also some experimental residential installations here in the East valley. I think that there will be more in the future.Nov 15, 2010
Help me out here. When you talk about someone doing criminal things and getting help from cronies, are you meaning Bill Clinton or Barack Obama?Oct 29, 2010
Not voting early comes with risks too.
You have the risk of being influenced by last minute lies as the campaigns get more desperate. For example look at the campaigns with Harry Mitchel and Quayle as targets. These guys don't even have anything good to say about themselves. Mitchell is reduced to claiming that his opponent will fire all the teachers. A Congressman doesn't even have a say in hiring of teachers.
Listen to Goddard's lies about the current Governor. He tries not to talk about his time as AG. He says Governor Brewer hasn't done enough. Hah!
It goes on and on through out most of the races. There are total idiots running. Some of the Candidates are even jokes. I don't think any party has good choices in every slot.
The ballot initiatives are all loosers. I voted early, and I didn't vote for any of the State initiatives. Mesa did have some good things. Renewal of Bonds for Utility services. The state just wants to take the money they promised for other things.
So, avoid the lines, go ahead and vote early. Avoid the last minute lies, Vote before the last minute surprises get sprung. They will all be shown to be lies or misinformation anyway.
I do agree, though, we should not vote for someone who is already dead.
I did vote for at least one candidate from every party, except the Greens. Did you?Oct 20, 2010
