Yesterday I was talking to a high school junior about American history. He was able to carry on a very intelligent and informed discussion of which President might be considered to have been our "best", citing pluses and minuses, who had violated the Constitution and whether or not each violation was actually a good thing or not.
The problem isn't with our schools. Students who actually care still get a good education. The problem is with the parents of most students, who don't care about history, and so don't care whether their kids learn anything about it.

VofReason, in the interest of balance, I have to point out that "... have a donkey for there symbol" is worse than "truth"s mistake.

randymanaz, saying that you believe that shooting a shoplifter is justified endangers my right to carry. If you really carry a gun, you had damned well better read the law. You can't shoot somebody for shoplifting.
There are a few specific crimes that justify shooting, and they pretty much all involve somebody being in physical danger.

DAJ, the fact that you take an issue of illegal immigration and twist it into an issue of ethnicity make YOU the racist.
Your "they" rule is grossly oversimplified. If I say that "they say that serum cholesterol is a factor in heart attacks" am I being discriminatory? How about "They played a pretty good game last night?"
People who break the law don't deserve as much respect as law-abiding people. If you walked out and found that your neighbor had parked on your lawn, would you treat them with the same respect that you would otherwise?
truth says that the elephant is "way to intelligent" to symbolize the GOP.
truth should learn the difference between "to" and "too" before commenting on intelligence.
DAJ, you're mistaken. If you're here illegally, you can't legally carry concealed.
What's wrong with "intimidating" people who are here illegally? How should we treat them? With respect??
truth, it's only reasonable to measure the impact of a law on the criminal acts it's intended to reduce against the impact on honest citizens.
Most gun control laws have little impact on criminals, because violations are difficult to detect and prosecute. How could the police possibly know, for example, that a burglar sold a stolen gun to a prohibited possessor without requiring a background check?
On the other hand, "universal background checks" would force law abiding citizens to ask the permission of the federal government to sell a firearm to a neighbor, and make them pay somebody to broker the deal.6 days ago
LiveInGilbert, there is a critical distinction between "shunning all government" and demanding that all governments always obey the law.

Arizona Willie, the issue isn't profit, it's that the government must abide by the law just like the citizens do. A citizen can't just decide to open a business if it would violate the law, and a Town shouldn't either.
If nobody ever says anything when the government violates the law, before long, they'll get the idea that the law isn't really important, as long as they think they're doing what's best for the people.2 weeks ago
That first sentence was intended to read "... at least SOME Gilbert officials agree is valid..."
