Before everyone gets their undies in a twist -- here's ANOTHER report quoting from the SAME CENSUS -- and Arizona isn't even in the bottom 10. So ... what's going on here?
This link sheds some light on the Hispanic comments others are making here (from pure speculation) http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/income_wealth/cb10-144.html
And here's a link with a PDF that even tells you how many illegal immigrants they counted and how much money they are making a year. Hint - average is $36,000 http://www.census.gov/prod/2010pubs/p60-238.pdf
At any rate - this is all I can find on the Govt Census page. So inquiring minds want to know what the source is for these reports and WHY are the two news articles reporting different things?Sep 18, 2010
Another item not reported here is that the Arizona bill closely resembles and existing Federal bill that was enacted 70 years ago. AND, humorously enough, it also is very similar to a bill in California. So, LA peeps who are boycotting us, perhaps you should boycott your own state. The fact that we want to enforce our laws and you don't is no excuse to try and punish us with an economic boycott. Which, I might add, is counter-productive, since we sell you 25% of your electricity from our AZ plants. Guess you have to stop buying that, eh?
What are we saying to the rest of the world when our own citizens argue that a law does not have to be followed? That our borders do not need to be secured? Can I now go into California with guns and fruit? Do I still need to go through TSA and Customs at the airport? Can i just pick which laws I want to follow and ignore the inconvenient and messy ones? This is a dumb debate. The law is the law. Illegal is illegal. Why is this so hard?May 23, 2010
This is a relatively good recap of 70% of the issues. I agree that calling the bill Nazism or Racist is just silly. Nazi's were on the offensive, setting out to destroy an entire people, along with gays, Gypsies, and everyone who disagreed with them. We are on the Defensive. We are trying to secure and protect a border. I don't understand why our troops can be deployed around the world to protect other countries borders and we can't have them in our very own "DMZ" between a third world country and the US.
I'm one of those who agrees that we need this new immigration bill. I applaud Brewer for putting changes in right away when the bill was first introduced. I am not a fan of either Pearce or Arpaio, However, just as ALL Illegals are not hardened criminals, ALL police in AZ are NOT Arpaio or Pearce.
As for assertion #3 that illegal activity "has slowed or even stopped since the economic decline" - I'm SHOCKED that a responsible journalist would assert that. Please go to www.borderinvasionpics.com and
www.secureborderintel.org and reassess your position.
#4 is also a specious statement. If an illegal immigrant is working for a company, they are usually NOT on payroll - and therefore are not paying into the payroll tax system. If they ARE, then they stole someone's ID, and that person will gain from the payroll tax paid in (as it should be.) There is a good analysis out there on the web called Joe Legal vs Jose Illegal. At the end of the day, an undocumented worker making $15 per hour and not paying into any of the systems, reaping the rewards of the system - free medical, lowered rents, food stamps, etc - winds up with $31,200 at the end of the year. While Joe Legal making $25 per hour and working the same hours with the same family situation winds up with $16,000 at the end of the year. Hardly motivation to become legal. I would like to see someone actually do an analysis of the real cost.
Item #6 is laughable - Saying that it's better because instead of more than half a MILLION illegals EACH YEAR, we are down to a quarter of a MILLION. Whoopdedoo. That means we are down to 660 people a DAY crossing the border instead of 1,643. I know towns in the midwest smaller than that.
With RIGHTS come Responsibilities and Obligations. Illegal is illegal. Illegal is criminal. People who are here illegally should NOT be able to protest in the streets! They haven't earned the Rights and have not lived up to the Responsibilities and Obligations of citizenship.
If they want to become citizens - I welcome them with open arms. Till then, I support the Bill!May 23, 2010
