bfgair: You are getting ahead of yourself, simply being in the US illegally is not a felony it is a civil offense. 8 U.S.C. § 1325 : US Code - Section 1325: Improper entry by alien
You have however, hit the nail on the head regarding what the true offense may be. If Sheriff Babiew did not report the presence of his illegal alien lover, to INS while he was screaming at Congress and the President to do something about illegal immigration...I think everyone will have a problems with him, continuing as Sheriff.
I suspect that if the Babieu actually had his illegal alien gay lover stay at his residence that may well put him in the corsshairs of Arizona's human smuggling law.
Arizona Revised Statutes - Title 13 Criminal Code - Section 13-2319 Smuggling; classification; definitions
"3. "Smuggling of human beings" means the transportation, procurement of transportation or use of property or real property by a person or an entity that knows or has reason to know that the person or persons transported or to be transported are not United States citizens, permanent resident aliens or persons otherwise lawfully in this state or have attempted to enter, entered or remained in the United States in violation of law."
As far as the New Times being a proponent of all things Gay turning against Sheriff Babieu who is (now at least) openly Gay...what do you expect? the Republican party is the enemy of Gay and Lesbian people in all things. If you are Gay and a member of the Republican party you are a political enemy.
As far as Paul Babieu's political career being over...I wouldn't bet on it. Politicians are half snake and half cat. (the snake part is slippery and slimy, the cat part is 9 lives)Feb 18, 2012
Going from Pinal County Sheriff to Congress will be like Luke Sky Walker going over to the Dark Side of the Force.
Congress is not an institution of reform. It is an institution of corruption and bribery. Sheriff Babeu will no doubt become very wealthy, but he will need to change his tune. There won't be any meaningful reform, he will be receiving tons of money from special interest and the "Illegal Immigration" problem, will never be fixed until we hold a constitutional convention that does away with the current federal government and replaces it with one that is responsive to the people, not to corporations and special interest.
John McCain has made one undeniable statement of absolute truth while serving as Arizona's US Senator, he said in the run up to the 2000 Presidential Election "The Political Process in Washington Corrupts EVERYONE" no one denies this.
So why would a man who beside being an excellent politician who happens to be a very strong voice for Law Enforcement in Arizona, want to join the side of the team that will forever prevent Arizona from protecting its citizens from the very Illegal Invasion he says he is trying to stop???
No doubt Sheriff Babeu will be elected to Congress in his currently squeaky clean state. But I don't think anyone should get their hopes up that he will make a difference, he will only make a personal fortune.
As for Pinal County, hope they get a good Sheriff in the deal as Pinal has a recent history of Corruption that needs some adult supervision which Sheriff Babieu has been providing, another Rosco P. Coltrane could seriously harm Pinal County.Jan 4, 2012
