@ Ted - I don't doubt the sincerity of your desire for better government but the participation, or lack thereof, by registered voters in either the Republican or Democrat parties is an issue for each respective political party to address. The Open Primary Initiative does not resolve that issue. If the concern is about involving those registered as Independents, then educating them about the fact that they can choose to vote in either party's primary is the better approach. If we want to address the difficulties for Independent candidates to qualify for the ballot, then let's change the statutes to require the same amount of signatures for Independents as there is for Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, or Greens. The Open Primary does not address either of those points. As for "try it," that's not a sound reason to alter our political process and as a voter initiative, the negative consequences likely to follow would then require a similar effort to fix - not so easy. Lastly, this Initiative would benefit an incumbent office holder because of the expense required to raise voter awareness of a candidate in a jungle primary. Even though I would likely benefit, I still don't favor it.
